The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital city.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as many cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a very popular tourist destination because of its historic past. Elkin said that apart from its historical treasures, modern tourism is also included in the Jerusalem city. "The inauguration of this tunnel project [is] another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. The tunnel transforms the city into an attractive tourist destination for every kind of person within Israel, and worldwide."

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and also in the development of new attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of our capital city to the future of Jerusalem... I would like to invite cyclists to ride along a an attractive, well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the distinctive landscape of Old Jerusalem.

A total of NIS 25 million were invested in the project, budgeted by Elkin's ministry The Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, and the work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated, "The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument for realizing our vision to change the concept transportation throughout Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which will connect to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing bicycle routes in the city as well as those that will be paved throughout the city's neighborhoods in the hope of encouraging cycling among the city's residents as well as its visitors, and also in promoting the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water that runs to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Present works include road construction, installation blowers and advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is secure for everyone to use all year.
