Here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately. What if Patrick Mahomes wasn’t drafted by the Chiefs?
Let’s say, just for fun, he ended up in New York. Not the good kind. I’m talking Jets.
No Andy Reid. No Travis Kelce. Just chaos. A rotating door of coaches. No real offensive line. A defense giving up 30 points a game. You think Mahomes would still be Mahomes?
Look, this isn’t about doubting his skill. The guy is a freak of nature. But the NFL isn’t about raw talent alone. It’s about situation. Fit. Timing. Coaching.
If you throw Mahomes into a dysfunctional team, where the scheme sucks and the front office has no vision... his first few years would’ve been a disaster.
People would say “he holds the ball too long” or “he plays too much backyard football.” The same traits we now love about him would’ve been labeled red flags.
That’s the thing. Great players don’t just become great on their own. They need structure. They need the right support.
We talk about Brady needing Belichick. Or how Burrow clicked with Chase. But with Mahomes, people act like he could walk into any team and win a Super Bowl. That’s not how football works.
So next time we praise Mahomes and we should, let’s also give credit to the system that gave him room to grow.
Because the truth is... if he started his career with the Jets, we might be talking about him the way we talk about Sam Darnold.
Just a thought.
