In spite of being set in a post-Civil War time, the content, which was adjusted for the screen by Gerwig, feels new with sharp, cheeky silliness. The dynamic among Jo and Laurie feels like any cutting edge high school couple attempting to make sense of their relationship through the good and bad times of tears and chuckling.
