Utilizing found images from textbooks along with his own geometric patterns, Matthew Craven’s collages and illustrations seek to create a new handmade universe, juxtaposing imagery from different cultures and time periods to celebrate commonalities. Photographs of archaeological remains and the natural world are overlaid on colorful tiled backgrounds drawn on the back of vintage movie posters, to create a hypnotic and mesmerizing vernacular of symbols and designs. Featuring an introduction by LACMA curator Leslie Jones, PRIMER, is the first publication of Craven’s art and a reconfiguration of traditional historical narratives inspired by obsessive formations.

About the Author
Matthew Craven is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work centers around found imagery combined with hand-drawn geometric patterns. He has shown in galleries all over the world including, New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, and Switzerland. His work has been reviewed in notable outlets including The Huffington Post, Art Critical, and The Brooklyn Rail. In 2017, he was the artist-in-residence for the Marfa Myths Festival. PRIMER is the first monograph from Craven.

Leslie Jones is the Curator of Prints & Drawings at LACMA. She specializes in modern and contemporary works on paper.

Review: This is a new coffee table book but the cover looks terrible. I ordered the book and it arrived with the cover design misprinted (all text and art are way off center and too close to right side). I returned the book and asked for a replacement and the second copy that arrived had the same problem. I guess Amazon got all the books with misprinted covers. Maybe that's why it's discounted. At any rate, don't expect the cover of the book to look nice.

Review: As a devotee of experimental art and books-as-artworks, I was blown away by this monograph. Many of my favorite artists who have ever lived have not had book this lavish. Having never heard of Matthew Craven, it almost seemed odd that his very first book would be a 200-page monster with die-cuts, fold-outs, zine-like inserts, outstanding printing, and award worthy design. Check out a copy at a physical store, and while you’re at it BUY IT FROM THEM, because Amazon cannot begin to present work like this properly.
