Overview
Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX se instalaron en Madrid más de medio centenar de estudios fotográficos. Aunque en sus inicios, acudir a estos gabinetes de fotografía no era asequible para todos los bolsillos, la demanda de este innovador formato fotográfico motivó la aparición de nuevos estudios, con una considerable reducción de sus precios, lo que permitió que pudieran retratarse hasta las clases más populares. Tal fue su impacto que ningún estrato social quedó al margen. Delante de los objetivos de estos fotógrafos posaron ciudadanos de a pie, intelectuales, políticos, artistas, aristócratas, incluso los monarcas Isabel II, Amadeo de Saboya o Alfonso XII y sus familias, y las principales figuras de la tauromaquia. La 'carte de visite' ha dejado un legado sin precedentes, que permite contemplar hoy a la sociedad del posromanticismo con tal fidelidad que se llega a percibir hasta sus emociones y sentimientos.
