APPLIED VEDIC SCIENCE – ADVANCED (VEDANTA) (SAN8110) - This advanced course explores the various philosophical interpretations of the Vedanta, the last parts of the Vedas, by different schools of thought. These schools not only differ in their understanding of the Vedanta but also in their teachings and perception of the world both here and in the afterlife. The rich dialectical tradition between these schools of Vedanta still continues to this day. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Vedas by examining and comparing the diverse ontologies and teachings of these schools.

Prerequisites: Completed Applied Vedic Science – Basic (Vedanta)

The instruction language is Sanskrit

Enrollment is limited to only those currently enrolled in the Sanskrit Master’s Certificate program at MIT-SVS.

Admission into the Master’s Program in Sanskrit through MIT-SVS is required

Prior completion of the MA Sanskrit course is necessary.

In this Applied Vedic Science – Advanced (Vedanta) course, students will become familiar with the ontological frameworks put forth by the three schools of Vedanta, namely Advaita, Visistadvaita, and Dvaita, through the study of their core texts. Students will have the opportunity to:

Grasp the different ways in which the same philosophical content is presented through the various darsanas, all of which have roots in the Vedic tradition. Recognize the language variations employed by the different schools of Vedanta in presenting their doctrines.

This course is an elective option for students in the MA in Sanskrit or Masters’ Certificate in Sanskrit program and will be offered in the Spring 2023 quarter. The central focus of the course is the study of Sanskrit Studies. By exploring the intricacies of Vedanta and Vedic science, students will deepen their understanding of the philosophy and teachings of the Vedas.
