Title: This Does What It Says

Review: It remains very general. States what it will tell you. Tells you. States what it told you. If you enjoy The Notebook this might be useful for you if you want a reference on how to outline.

It was hard for me to engage with on the first read through. Down right unpleasant. I rarely read romance that doesn't also command a place in a different category: urban fantasy, paranormal, supernatural, action adventure, mystery or erotica.

The examples given seemed geared towards sweet romance or general romance that I would never purposely read. No on page action and the barest promise of future action.

If you need a safe writing reference this may be a good choice.

The second read through was more meaty for me. I knew there would be zero references to my favorite things as a reader so I read to glean from what the book does have...A very general overview followed by a specific outline (Ch 7) and then a demonstration of how the author used the outline by way of a mostly finished novel/novella.

My favorite moment of reading this is that it brought back a memory of my manager stomping on a copy The Notebook that fell off the shelf. She stomped that thing while saying, "I hate you. I hate you! I'd throw you all away if I could." Andrea, you embody the existential angst of book people. You are dearly missed.

If you need a safe reference for how to outline this may be a good choice for you.

Review: The bulk of the text is an outline and a long example. The outline splits a romance into three acts: The Beginning, The Middle, and The End. Each act is split into three sections: The Beginning of the Act, The Middle of the Act, and The End of the Act. (There are 9 total sections across the whole book). Each section is further split into individual elements. There’s more variation in how many elements go with each section, but there are 44 total. The elements are more "ingredients" a romance should have rather than plot points.

That said, the outline here is similar to the plot points that Gwen Hayes shares in her book 'Romancing the Beat'. But this book has more explanation of the elements that go into a romance and a much longer example.

In addition to the outline, the author also gives a breakdown of several different types of stories that may contain romance but not belong on the “Romance” shelf in a bookstore or Amazon. She explains what a romance story must include to be “Romance”. And she reviews common story structures and describes why they are hard to use in structuring a romance. All super helpful if you're new to romance.

As other reviewers noted, the elements of the outline suggest a rather chaste story with an “almost kiss” happening near the midpoint. If you are writing a steamier story, you’ll want to adapt the elements to fit the heat level of your story. The general principle of having the relationship be more superficial and physical in the beginning, and more emotionally intimate later on applies no matter when your romantic heroes first kiss or how many times they make love. Even if you're physically intimate with someone, you still might be withholding secrets, not introducing your partner to your parents, not letting your partner take control in the bedroom, etc. In a steamier romance, those markers of emotional intimacy (or any others you can create based on what your heroes are most scared of), are going to be the things that show readers that the relationship is progressing, because the heroes are willing to be vulnerable with each other.

Review: I have read Gwen Hayes' Romancing the Beat which is very interesting, although again, formulaic. Recently, a famous romance author did a survey with her readers on what would get a reader tired of an author, i.e. stop reading a particular author. One of the most repeated themes was: same basic story with different locations and characters. It comes with plugging in the beats. You can almost see where an author plugs in the beats. Setup, introduce character before meeting love interest. Boom. Cute or not so cute meet. Sparks fly but there's a glitch. Etc. Etc. Etc. with the requisite dark moment or break up followed by a grand romantic gesture. Believe me, if you've read as many books as I have, you just know what's going to happen after next. The attempted kiss is always interrupted by something. The ex always appears at an inopportune moment. The misunderstanding happens around 75% mark. Then there's the soul-searching and the wallowing ... check, check, check.

The meat of the book, Chapter 7, which is the master outline is done by 25% of the book. The master outline is just an explanation of each of Gwen's beats. The rest is a blow-by-blow of how the author wrote one of her novels. It's a writing journal. I guess my main thing is that there was not really any new content that you couldn't have gotten from Romancing the Beat or any of the other how to write a romance books.

There's really nothing given about interweaving subplots, secondary characters, or unexpected twists. What would be more interesting would be how an author can combine a suspense plot with a romance plot or a mystery with a romance.

I thought this book covered a lot of good topics that many writers face, particularly those who put romance or romantic subplots into their books.
This book covers a lot of different areas of romance writing and is a good reference for anyone wanting to up their writing game or include additional romance into their books.
