Minecraft 1.18 made several very important changes to Minecraft's world generation. You can play Minecraft 1.18 or later and go below Y-Level 0 and get into negative figures. Below Y-Level 0 you'll see all the standard ore as well as Diamonds, embedded in Deepslate blocks instead of normal Stone blocks.

To discover Diamonds in Minecraft 1.18 you'll need to dig down to between Y-Level 15 and Y-Level 64, however, to increase your chances of finding Diamonds you should dig to the lowest point before reaching bedrock, since the spawn chance for Diamonds increases the further you go.

For more information about where you can find most concentrations of Diamonds or other resources, look at the graph below of ore distributions in 1.18

As you can see it, the 1.18 update has drastically altered the way ores spawn in Minecraft. Each ore's distribution is shown with a bar that changes in thickness depending on Y levels.

Thankfully the formula for Diamond is pretty straightforward It begins to generate at Y=15, and increases linearly in frequency the further down you go. However diamond placement is subject to what Mojang call "reduced air exposure" in 1.18. This means that when you find that a Diamond is scheduled to be placed close to an open air block during world generation, it will have the chance of not spawning. This makes it more difficult to locate diamonds in cave walls and the like and you'll have to work hard at digging tunnels through the earth's deepslate to increase the chances of finding diamonds.

Summary: To quickly find diamonds, dig as low as possible until you reach bedrock. Then, begin strip-mining!

To find out the level of your body's Y-axis by pressing F3 to display the coordinates. The current level of your bottom half is indicated by the second number that follows "XYZ".

While not quite as strong as Netherite tools, Diamond tools are essential for anyone who wants to advance in any world or Minecraft server. Keep an eye out for The Wild Update's Warden!

How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.17

If you're still playing Minecraft 1.17 or older You can find Diamond Ore within every Overworld biome that has Y-levels 1-15. They usually appear between levels 5-12, therefore if you want to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds keep your distance between these two levels.

No matter what version of Minecraft you're playing with, Diamonds will spawn in small veins of up to 9 blocks at a time, although sometimes you'll see larger veins that are composed of multiple veins that touch each other. So even at Games , Diamonds are pretty rare.

The best method to mine Diamonds in Minecraft

Diamond Ore can only be mined using an Iron Pickaxe or better. Diamonds are not as common in open spaces , such as caves. Therefore it is essential to strip-mine across all directions to maximize the chances of finding them in Minecraft.

Dig down to level 57, and construct a 2-block-tall tunnel in all directions. This is the most efficient way to mine Diamonds in Minecraft 1.18. Then begin to mine on either side in 2x1 tunnels, leaving a 2-block-wide gap between each tunnel.

When you're satisfied that you've stripped-mined all Diamonds at the level, repeat the entire process at level -53. You'll be able see all Diamonds that spawn between level -58 and 51 if you mine this way at both levels -57 and 53. This lets you extract the highest concentration of Diamonds, without running into blocks of Bedrock that could slow down strip mining progress.

This method works with Minecraft 1.17 and earlier versions. However, levels 6 and 10 are required.

While mining, it's always a good idea to have a water bucket on your person, as pockets of lava are quite common at these levels. To light your way and keep mobs out of your tunnels, bring plenty of torchlight. Alternatively you could illuminate your way with Night Vision potions - though this won't prevent mobs from spawning.

This is all you need to know to quickly find Diamonds in Minecraft. However, diamonds alone are not enough. You'll need to consult our guide on Enchantments to learn how to enhance your equipment to make it as powerful as it can be. If you're having difficulty finding Diamonds you can check out our list of Texture Packs as some of them will help you spot ores more easily. While you're digging keep an eye out for Copper, the brand new ore that was added in 1.17 that you can use to create amazing new builds and fancy tools, like the Lightning Rod.
