Overview
This is Shane's story. She describes how her lack of trust affected her life, preventing her from making friends as a child and forming relationships in adult life. Throughout her childhood years she moved from place to place with her mother, never able to form friendships, continually changing schools and adapting to new surroundings. She tells how she was abused by someone she should have been able to trust and who she saw as a friend. Not believed by her mother, she was never able to share her torment with anyone, and so never addressed her demons, which continued to haunt her into adulthood. From an early age she questioned her own sexuality, but it was not until she was in her twenties she had her first gay relationship. But even throughout her adult life Shane found her faith in people tested, being betrayed by the very people she should have been able to trust. She was tormented not only by her own issues, but felt deeply concerned for people who she saw as friends, and who were themselves being deceived by the ones they loved. Shane passed away on 6th November 2021, spending the last 10 years of her life on her own. Perhaps during that time she had some peace of mind as she had some good friends who never let her down, and although she didn't have a relationship, she was content with her own company. "When you think you know someone, it comes with surprise and sadness that there were parts of their life you knew nothing about; so how much do you really know someone?" "A thought provoking read about trust, abuse and the loss of self-esteem." This is a dialogue of how the lack of trust can affect someone, resulting in torment and confusion and a desperation to find answers.
