Greg Berlanti's DC TV franchise has been one of the network's flagship aspects ever since 2012 when Arrow premiered. As The CW kept adding one Arrowverse spinoff after another, the channel was partially known as the DC TV platform. While The CW has renewed most of their DC properties over the last few years, 2022 changed that following the news that WarnerMedia and Paramount were putting the network up for sale.
Because of a potential new owner coming in, The CW halted their renewal and cancelations for the 2022-2023 TV season, forcing fans to wait longer than usual to hear about their favorite shows. Legends of Tomorrow season 7 was one of the Arrowverse shows to have only 13 episodes this year, as it finished airing in early March, alongside Batwoman season 3. Following the finales, reports began to surface that both Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman were on the bubble, meaning there was a risk The CW wouldn't renew them for another season.
After an extensive wait, Legends of Tomorrow was officially canceled late last week by The CW, ending its 7-year run that consisted of 110 episodes. Fans took to social media to share their feelings about the cancelation, with many being disappointed in The CW for not giving the show at least one final season to wrap everything up properly. While viewers were understandably upset by the news, several cast members have shared some emotional words about Legends of Tomorrow coming to an end. Stars such as Tala Ashe (Zari Tarazi,) Olivia Swann (Astra Logue,) Shayan Sobhian (Behrad Tarazi,) and Adam Tsekhman (Gary Green) posted on their social media pages what the show meant to them, while also honoring everyone who had made Legends of Tomorrow possible, including the viewers.
Previous reports had stated that The CW was allegedly only going to bring back two additional DC TV properties for the 2022-2023 TV season. Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and newcomer Naomi were up for consideration alongside the currently-in-works Gotham Knights series. Since Stargirl season 3 has yet to premiere, it's too soon for The CW to determine if it will get a fourth season or not. As Legends of Tomorrow got canceled, so has Batwoman, as the news of the former came only hours after the latter was announced to have been scrapped too.
So far, The CW's 2022-2023 TV season slate, in terms of Arrowverse shows, only has The Flash and Superman & Lois on the schedule, as the two series got renewed in March. Going into next season, The CW may have the least amount of DC TV shows in years, depending on what happens with Gotham Knights, Stargirl, and Naomi. The Legends of Tomorrow season 7 finale finished with a cliffhanger as the team got arrested by the Time Police, leaving their fates in limbo. Ideally, one of the returning Arrowverse dramas could perhaps serve as a vehicle to help the time-traveling drama get some kind of conclusion. Time will tell if the Arrowverse will use Legends of Tomorrow again, but for the time being, fans will sadly not see those characters for the foreseeable future.
To break down more of the plot would spoil a movie that relies on surprise for great effect. Multiverse of Madness is, in essence, the first official MCU horror film -- with Sam Raimi pulling out all the stops, especially in an extended second-act sequence that genuinely pushes the PG-13 rating at moments. This is the part of the film Raimi excels at, imbuing Strange and America's journey with a mix of schlock horror film techniques and psychedelic imagery straight from the comics that easily elevate this film visually to the top of the MCU. There's a looseness to Raimi's version of magic that embraces a weird, infectious sense of fun -- with a literal musical fight that is arguably a highlight of the genre, let alone the franchise.
The problems with Multiverse of Madness aren't with the direction -- and it isn't the acting either, even if there are certain highlights. While Cumberbatch and Wong are fun enough, the film really thrives on Gomez and Olsen. The former is fun and instantly endearing, even as the character America herself shifts between periods of being a standard "young person finding that the true strength was in them all along" archetype and a McGuffin, thanks to her sheer power. Meanwhile, Olsen is a powerhouse, shifting from terrifying to tragic and back again within moments. She's a truly interesting figure in the film, committing monstrous acts and never seeking redemption or understanding, but with an emphatic pain and fury that Olsen does tremendous work with.
