Title: The Big Red One plays zombie apocalypse (and loses).

Review: 99% of the zombie apocalypse books out there are about civilians or Tier 1 operators dealing with the undead. This book is the 1%. Anyone that has spent any amount of time in the regular Army will read this book and nod along with it as the mech infantry grunts from Fort Riley attempt to stop the zombie apocalypse from spreading beyond Kansas City, MO. There are trials and tribulations. Successes and failures. Heroes and villains aplenty. The main character lives the reality of "military justice" being on par with "military intelligence" until the world falls apart and he "Sua Spontes" himself away from Fort Leavenworth and the Disciplinary Barracks during the initial outbreak on post. However, he finds out that he just jumped from the frying pan into the fire. It's a good thing the unit he hooks up with is more interested in effective leadership than his sketchy past. Read this book. It will keep your interest and make you think about how the reality of a breakdown in society would be dealt with outside of NYC or Washington D.C. Definitely worth the money. Get it done.

Title: A Zompoc book written by somebody who understands combat.

Review: Even if you don't exactly know a subject, it is interesting to read something written by an author who's been in the bad, the ugly and the crazy. This author understands being in a desperate firefight in the streets of a major city, and it comes through in his storytelling. Plot, theme, characterization, it's all here. I would say it's a page-turner, except I had to put it down and walk away, simply because it was too evocative of some nightmares I've had. This is Zompoc fiction written by somebody who understands the military, who is setting his story somewhere he has actually been. The attention to detail is excellent.

Title: really realistic military fiction

Review: The military action in this book is highly realistic. As a former infantryman myself I can see things happening just like this. The commo breakdowns. The heisitation to fire on citizens, the occasional cowardly soldier, it all rings true.
I am unsure if the antagonists are zombies. Considering that some speak I think not. At least not in the traditional sense. But being able to ignore all but the very worst wounds make the overrunning of the soldiers again and again all but guaranteed.
So a really good, militarily realistic book. Lots of room for sequels too.
I recommend it just for the realism. Well, for a zombie apocalypse level of realism at any rate.

Review: Shane does it again. I was hesitant to read the beta, because I am about wore out with zombies. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. Wife gets pissed when I spend all night in my office reading. Just had to suck this one up.
The characters are almost too damned familiar; it seems like I knew these guys from my old mech platoon in 1st Infantry Division. The reason for him getting jailed was too believable. The reason for him busting out was just Hobson's Choice. The reason for joining back up with a group was . . . Well, leaders gotta lead. You can't just sit back and watch.
Shane develops a man who wants to just ride out his time into a man who does what only a few can do, lead other soldiers into and out of danger. All kinds of danger. Some expected. Some damned surprising. Some infuriatingly all too familiar.
No Sergeant Fury here, just a good troop who has that knack for leading. I'd like to see more of this character.

Title: Accurate reflection of the Real World from a military POV

Review: The plot is stirring. A good NCO is railroaded for being emotional over a UCMJ violation involving his SO. The narrative is true to life of what I've seen of the modern military over the last 40 years, *especially* in CONUS. Different rules of engagement. One of continuing problems that comes up, one's dealing with AmCits. So there appears to be a duty to protect and get them help. Kinda hard to do when they're trying to eat you alive. There's also a definite "karma is a bitch" lesson. Recommended. Col. Gries knocked this one out of the park. I look forward to more of his works.
