Review: Starting over with the Spenser series. Up to #3 - this one. What a “cracking good yarn” as they say! And baseball, Boston, the Red Sox, a sweaty radio personality, sexy women - it’s a bit dated in that way, it was the 70s, after all - and our knight errant (‘tho pretty much tethered to Boston), our Paladin, with a metaphorical white steed and armor that needs just a little bit of polishing.
Dang! Roger B Parker was good. The best ever, I think.

Title: The Red Sox, Gangsters and Gambling

Review: That's what comes out of Spenser's latest case. Spenser is hired by a representative of the league to investigate Red Sox pitcher, Marty Rabb. He goes undercover as a writer, so not draw suspicion to his investigation. He comes across Bucky Maynard, who does the play-by-play and his "driver" Lester whose hobbies include chewing bubble gum and Tae-known-do. He something doesn't add up, he digs deeper into Linda Rabb, Marty's wife. The deeper he digs, the more dangerous things get for our sly sleuth because Linda Rabb isn't the only one worried about her secret. Two goons who decide to pay Spenser a visit at his office might have a reason for keeping Linda's secret a secret. But to uncover Linda's secret, Spenser will have to travel out into the sticks of Illinois to the concrete jungles of New York City. Tensions will rise, threats will be made and our Goodhearted Gumshoe just might have to get his hands dirty in the end.
The details are perfectly layered. You learn so much about Linda Rabb and she isn't even present for most of the time. The crooks are as crooked and shameless as Joe Barboza. They blackmail, they cheat and some are not afraid to kill. And the other halves are pimps. By the time you finish reading this book, Spenser will have committed an act that makes him question his moral code and really bothers him in the last few chapters. It is refreshing to read something where our witty wise-cracking hero doesn't feel so heroic and you see him as a struggling self-doubting human being.
If you're reading detective novels, mystery novels or any Spenser novels for that matter; then make sure that your pick up this one. You won't regret it.

Review: The 70’s setting is an interesting given. Parker captures the times as if he understands their fleeting nature in the fashion and the pathos of his descriptions.
Then he captures all our humanity in the details of the world in which he’s moving.
And then he hits the human layers of morality with well constructed plotting to reveal what holds his characters to their behavior. What is right and what is circumstance? How do we act with integrity but live in conundrum?
He’s a brilliant philosopher.

Title: Great character development for Spenser

Review: Spenser's third book is his first foray into the "someone's fixing the game" story. He's put on the case by Healey (from "God Save") and is looking into the Red Sox and trying to figure out if someone's fixing the game. He drinks Miller (argh) and while he talks about "Susan Silverman" he's also seeing "Brenda Loring" (always the full name). Susan's given him a birthday and xmas present so it's been a little while since the last book.
Spenser goes out to Illinois and New York on some tracking, but the rest of the story centers around Boston. He confronts a loan shark and his watchdog, asks Lt. Quirk for help. He tries to help out the trapped instead of doing what he was hired to do, which is fun, to watch his moral code develop and strengthen.
Very strangely, though, Spenser sets up two people to be killed. Remember, Spenser is the guy who a few years later later won't shoot a truly bad guy who is a mortal threat to him - just because the guy is unarmed and on the floor. For him to be deliberately setting up the death of two guys is a little on the edge of his "morality scale". He's like a colt growing into a horse - he's at that slightly awkward stage, but you can see the huge potential just around the corner.
My thoughts - I like the "inside the action" stories, where you learn about something in detail. It's neat hearing about how baseball works at Fenway, and the locations are all right around Boston.
However, it's bizarre that book 2 was so solidly "Susan Silverman" while this one shows Brenda and only mentions Susan in bits until the end. Spenser still drinks heavily as he almost "doubts what he's doing" - he doesn't have the self confidence of later books. He's unsure about confronting the loan shark. He drinks Miller!! He sets up the bad guy so he can kill him. Hmmmmmmm.

Review: I just discovered Spenser. For years I heard about how good they were but I was busy reading the big name mystery/adventure writers. Now that I'm retired I have the time to pursue my love of reading. I am on the 4th Spenser book right now and already we're friends. He is an earth bound Superman. He loves the ladies, good alcohol, good food, sharp clothes, etc. His downfall is his choice of cars. Instead of an Aston Martin or a Corvette, he drives what I believe to be a '68 Chevy convertible. Dreadful choice for a guy with good taste. I love Parker's writing, his wit and his ability to make you feel like you know the charachters. It's a shame he is gone, but the various writers who have assumed writing his books are very good. I highly recommend both the Spenser and the Jesse Stone series. Enjoy.
