An unusual gin from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 or Monkey Gin, for short contains a unique ingredient. The 47 comes from the number of botanicals that go into this unique gin, and the fact it's bottled at a healthy 47%. This plethora of ingredients has paid off, and in 2011 Monkey 47 won the World Spirits Award Gold in the Gin category and Gold for best in class for the Gin Worldwide at the International Wine and Spirits Competition London. Nose: Oh there is a lot going on here... Palate: Predictably complex, this is a robust and powerful gin with plenty of spice, fruit and herb flavours. It's very well structured, and difficult to unpick but a citrus fresh start segues into pine and wood notes for a drying finish. Finish: Wooded and reassuringly heavy. Overall: A unique gin, that is crying out to be made into a Martini. It'll need an equally robust vermouth though. I tried this for the first time this summer at a restaurant in Lisbon that boasted 18 pages small print of different types of gin. I got it with tonic and a little lime juice and was blown away. Best I ever had. Safe to say I'll be drinking this a lot now. You certainly can't taste them all. Seems like a marketing ploy to me... Even the most verbose booze snob would struggle to name even half I reckon. It tastes confused to my palate - not really knowing where in the flavour spectrum it really wants to sit... Not overtly citrusy, floral, spiced or sweet to start. Complex is correct, so lots to talk about - does it make a great gin? The finish reminiscent of cough syrup. Never met a martini I didn't like, but neither had I ever tried gin neat, until a couple of days ago. With a friend on an urban loft balcony, glorious summer evening, cigar lit, nice cheese on the plate... There will always be a bottle in my liquor cabinet from now on. For sipping, not for mixing. I'm a big Hendricks fan and still am this however is a very different taste and one to be savoured, with Fever tree Mediterranean it tastes fantastic.... I'm not the biggest connoisseur, I usually stick to bombay or when i want to spend a little extra, i get a nice bottle of hendrix. When we opened up the bottle, both my wife and I could detect the above average floral and spicy fragrances. Mix it with some canadian club tonic and a fresh slice of cucumber from the garden on ice. The first sip went downnn so smoothly. It was like nectar of the gods. What a refreshing taste. Not to syrupy or a strong alcohol hit. Its delicate and smooth. I was at work thr next day and all i could think of, was that i could t wait to get home to have another. Its a bit pricy for my budget. This will be my definitely notch up gin when i want to spoil myself. Ill be recommending this beauty to any gin lovers. If you want to enter the gin world, start with this one, youll be hooked. Of all the gins, Monkey 47 is the pinnacle all others try to reach. Many place a close second but this gin is complex and spectacular. Until last year when I was in Spain I was in I gin bar with friends and got bought a monkey 47 I had it not to be rude and WOW it was amazing. So now I don't hesitate to go out and stock up on 47 big thumbs up from me. One night in Amsterdam my wife and I and another couple went to the bar in the Pulitzer Hotel. Having never heard of it I was intrigued, He'd made a Monkey 47 with a splash of Fever Tree Indian Tonic garnished with an orange peel infused with three cloves. I was immediately blow away and have been drinking it since. It is by far the most complex and enjoyable Gin and can be enjoyed neat as well as in a cocktail. I get it by the case 6 bottles and have converted many vodka drinkers to the Monkey. I don't like Gin, I don't even know why I tried it. It makes it all the more special. It truly will take your gin tasting to a new level. It is very expensive as far as gin goes but it is well worth it. Crispy, slightly fruity and flavorful with a lot going on. It is my new favorite gin. It's almost like a gin liqueur! So far, I can't bear to drown it in a cocktail: All by itself, in a thin-crystal glass... I tested this at wine club gathering in Singapore recently and was immediately hooked on to the same. One of the best drinks I ever had. On the rock 11th August 2016 One night in Aruba On a beautiful, starlit night in Aruba, my companion and I returned to our lodging at the New Amsterdam Resort and stopped at the outside cocktail lounge for an end of the evening drink. Our bartender, appologized if he appeared to be distracted but there was a party of approximately 6 individuals testing gin. The gin they were savoring we quickly learned was Monkey 47 Gin. Having had a long association with extra, extra dry Gin Martinis, I was, over the top curious. To my surprise and good fortune, the bartender gave me a taste. Monkey Gin was the best gin I had ever tasted. Upon returning home to the United States, I tried several times to purchase a bottle. However, was informed that it was not shipped to the United States. Which of course I later discovered was not correct. It is not shipped to Upstate New York but could readily be purchased on Long Island and also in Florida. One day on returning home from work, there on my porch sat this beautiful bottle of Monkey 47 Gin. Nancy Hennessy 2nd August 2016 Greatest Gin of all time, by a long shot. Fast-forward a few months later, everyone I know loves a Monkey 47 Gin and Fever-Tree Tonic Water with sliced Cucumbers unnecessary since it's Monkey, but the only acceptable garnish if that's an interest. A dear friend was given a bottle of this as a gift. This friend does not care for gin, so he passed the bottle along to me knowing my affection for the delicious variety of alcohol. I poured my first sampling of Monkey 47 in my favorite glass over one cube of ice....... I was immediately lost in pure ecstasy. Monkey 47 is a MUST TRY for any gin conoseuir. No bite, just warm overtones. Very strange in a nice way. I added fevertree tonic,which is popular at the moment, suprisingly the taste remained constant until the last sip. This is one of my top 3 gins at present 12th June 2016 Sehr Gut This really is a top gin. Don't spoil it with tonic, just an ice cube though a drop of orange bitters works very well. It's slightly stronger than most other gins, and you can certainly taste it. There's lots of flavours from the botanicals - it's quite fruity and rather spicy. This really is a gin to rival the complexity of a good single malt whisky. It totally blew my mind. This is the best gin I've ever had. It goes well with the traditional tonic, or vermouth, or a bit of plum, or even just with a little ice - it's heavy enough to hold up by itself. And it is unique, cannot recommend enough. I couldn't quite make out initially what I was smelling but I felt like I was sitting out in a meadow on a Spring day. This Gin is an absolute delight to drink. If you like Gin, you must try this! One sniff of what was left, and I was hooked. Thank goodness we found a UK distributor. This gin is surprising, bold, complex and uncompromising. Pair it with Fever Tree, and there is nothing like it. I brought back to bottles to Canada where it is unfortunately not available I'm working on that. This is by far the most complex gin I have tasted and definitely a welcome addition to any liquor cabinet. Agreed with the comment above about the pairing with Fever Tree...
