Overview
Organised from 25 January to 5 February 1924, the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc International Winter Sports Week was recognised as the first Winter Olympic Games in May 1926 by the International Olympic Committee. The determination of the people of Chamonix and the French Olympic Committee enabled 260 participants of 16 nationalities to compete in both snow and ice disciplines. Infused with simplicity and driven by the Olympic spirit, the 1924 Chamonix Games marked the beginning of the Olympic adventure of winter sports. This marvellous book, illustrated with never-before-seen images, is an opportunity to go behind the scenes of these ground-breaking Games, to learn more about the challenges of organising such an event in the face of the uncertainties of the weather, and to plunge into the heart of its sporting events and its visual and literary culture. Last but not least, you'll be charmed by its anecdotes and legendary figures such as the writer Roger Frison-Roche, the most eloquent promoter of these Games, Charles Jewtraw, the first Olympic champion in the history of the Winter Games, Clas Thunberg, the five-time medal-winning ski jumper, and Herma Szabó-Planck, the Austrian figure skater and Olympic champion.
