Since 1876, Jehovah’s Witnesses have believed that they are living in the last days of the present world. Charles T. Russell, their founder, advised his followers that members of Christ’s church would be raptured in 1878, and by 1914 Christ would destroy the nations and establish his kingdom on earth. The first prophecy was not fulfilled, but the outbreak of the First World War lent some credibility to the second. Ever since that time, Jehovah’s Witnesses have been predicting that the world would end “shortly.” Their numbers have grown to many millions in over two hundred countries. They distribute a billion pieces of literature annually, and continue to anticipate the end of the world.
For almost thirty years, M. James Penton’s Apocalypse Delayed has been the definitive scholarly study of this religious movement. As a former member of the sect, Penton offers a comprehensive overview of the Jehovah's Witnesses. His book is divided into three parts, each presenting the Witnesses’ story in a different context: historical, doctrinal, and sociological. Some of the issues he discusses are known to the general public, such as the sect’s opposition to military service and blood transfusions. Others involve internal controversies, including political control of the organization and the handling of dissent within the ranks.
Thoroughly revised, the third edition of Penton’s classic text includes substantial new information on the sources of Russell’s theology and on the church’s early leaders, as well as coverage of important developments within the sect since the second edition was published fifteen years ago.

Review: If you are a fader, a believer, have relatives in the JW organisation (Watchtower org), this book is for you.
This is the most in-depth explanation on how the calculation of the 2520 days from 607BC to AD1914 came to be and all the flawed calculations behind this doctrine, both from a biblical, historical and scientifically viewpoints. This book pulls back the curtain on one of the biggest scams of a pseudo-christian organisation, and it litterally helped tens of thousands see the hypocrisy behind the flawed doctrinal teachings that all members of this organisation are supposed to adhere to - blindly. Be prepared to see undeniable evidence that will change your view on the JW organisation forever. This is a book that will change your life. The indisputable evidence in the Watchtower's own litterature and the internal letters that have been published in this masterpiece makes this book both one of the most important books you can read if you have any connection to the JW religion.
One group in particular who MUST read this book is the group who contemplate becoming a member of this organization. Do yourself a favour and read this book before you make any decision you cannot change - and THEN make up your mind if the Watchtower org is still for you.

Review: This book is truly a masterpiece of non-fiction writing. Rarely does one come across a work on a topic that is as well-researched, thorough in scope, clearly-written, and well-organized as this.
"Apocalypse Delayed" is simply a comprehensive guide to everything one could possibly want to know about the Jehovah's Witnesses faith. It's organized into three broad sections, history, concepts/doctrines, and organization/community, with each section, in turn, broken down into numerous individual chapters. Mr. Penton is a fine writer, but to be clear, this is no rollicking narrative tale, and has very little literary flourish. It's simply a collection of useful, practical, and easily-accessible information on everything from which biblical theories inspired the religion's founder, Charles Taze Russell, to what working conditions are like in JW world headquarters in Brooklyn, to what exactly Witnesses believe about blood. Mr. Penton is an author who has a clear obsession with his topic, and a deep desire to provide the world with the most useful resource possible (the book even ends with an excellent appendix of mini-reviews on every other significant study of the Jehovah's Witnesses written to date). On this, he has more than succeeded.
There's not much more to say beyond if you are remotely interested in the Jehovah's Witnesses, this book will answer any and all questions you could possibly have.
My only criticisms are relatively minor: this book was originally published in the 1980s, and although the 2015 "third edition" does contain many important updates, some passages do feel somewhat dated, with the 1970s still often framed as if they were relatively recent, and of many of the quotes from Watchtower magazines pulled from issues run many decades ago, rather than more contemporary ones that surely make the same point (Watchtower is nothing if not deeply repetitive). Penton also occasionally has moments where he seems to presume the reader possesses a bit more pre-existing knowledge of the Witnesses than is probably reasonable, and there can be passing references to events or people the reader might wish to be explained in greater detail, rather than simply alluded to with language like "as would of course later be seen in the X scandal" or whatever.
But overall, these are small quibbles with a book that is, as I said, a truly fantastic work of reference. Penton has done the world a service in providing a book whose legacy will surely last for ages among scholars of this fascinating religious movement.
