Review: First bought this at age 40 after being diagnosed with a shoulder injury. I realized I was going downhill for lack of exercise & found Joyce Vedral's books in a bookstore. I still follow this program at age 72. While it specifies 3 sets of 10 reps using 3 lb. dumbbells for each exercise, I've added 4 lb. dumbbells and do 4 sets, alternating between 3 lb. and 4 lb. dumbbells for each set. People don't believe my age, and I can still rollerblade, which freaks out some people who expect older ladies to be frail & unsteady on their feet. My other aerobic exercise is climbing stairs. These are very time-efficient, and I get results without having to pay gym membership fees or taking a long time exercising.
This is the only program I have followed consistently and it works for me. I've given away several paperback books and finally got myself a hard bound copy.

Review: I have been into fitness all my life and probably have tried just about every type of exercise routine being taught today. I am always on the lookout for exercise systems I have not yet tried. I saw this one (the 12-Minute Total Body Workout by Joyce L. Vedral, Published in 1989) on Amazon for a bargain price and decided to purchase it.

Just for the record, I have tried various types of military fitness programs (The Army Green Beret 12-minute workout system, The U.S. Navy SEALS fitness programs), and numerous other total fitness routines. One of the interesting aspects of this program is that the majority of exercises you only need a three pound dumbbell set and is designed to give you a good workout in a short period of time. It also shows the 12-minute exercises you need to do each day of the week.

The areas covered in this large format soft cover book includes the following: Why the program works, the mind, the mood and the movement, a pair of three-pound dumbbells is all you need, the 12-minute Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday workouts. There is also a chapter on how to burn off more calories, making friends with foot and using this exercise program on the road. This book also covers aerobic exercises to maintain and improve your cardiovascular system.

This text is filled with clear black and white photographs showing the exercise routines along with detailed instructions on each page. In conclusion, if you are a person who wants to stay fit but is limited on your time, you may want to check out this simple and easy to follow routine. I have always favored total fitness exercise programs and this one is a good one.

Review: I have been a fan of Joyce Vedral since I got a copy of a book that she co-wrote with her daughter ("The College Dorm Workout") in college. That book was great and kept me pretty fit through college. I also tried her book "Bottoms Up" after college, but found it hard to stick to as the workouts were longer and I didn't have a lot of time to spend on them. I have recently decided to start working out with weights again, as it has proved to be very effective for me in the past. I got this book because I thought it would be a good way to work out quickly, and had enough variety (not the same workout every day) to keep me from getting bored. After two weeks, I am already starting to see some more definition in my shoulders and back and I look forward to seeing the progress that I am able to make going forward. One thing about this book -- it is pretty dated; the design and pictures do scream "1980's" as does the diet advice. But I'm not even taking a star away for that because I believe that her workouts are so effective.

Review: If so, this is for you. Joyce Vedral is a very accomplished writer and also experienced in weight training (she is an English professor at Pace University) So she can write, and she knows about her subject.
Faced with a physique that tended to put on weight, Vedral took up weight training, fell in love with it, and has written quite a few books on the subject. Here she has done an excellent job of figuring out a weight program that can be done anywhere, by nearly anyone, with simple equipment, no gym and just a bit of time.
While this won't whittle your abs down to a washboard or create monster pecs, this workout will keep you fit when you are on the go. If you are stuck in hotel rooms with no fitness centers (most of the world) or at home with kids (rest of the world) you can do this with a simple set of dumbells and a chair and telephone book. (You can even get water-fillable, collapsible dumbells to take up no weight in your suitcase.)
The routine does work the entire body and while not as good as a full workout in the gym with free weights, treadmill and Nautilus, and won't bulk you up, it is a good fitness routine to keep you ever in shape, in a minimum of time. It is NOT easy (you will be pleasantly tired afterwards) but it is effective.

Review: I used Joyce Vedral book approximately 30 years ago and loved her detailed steps to achieving the individual exercises with pictures. So at 75 years young I was of the impression that nothing could stand in my way but realized that some of the exercises were way above my capabilities.

Review: I bought this book back when it was new. I did what it said and lost 30 pounds. Alas, at some point, I got rid of the book. Thought I remembered all that was in it and didn't need it. But the pounds crept back on. I was exercising, but not losing. I bought the book again! Followed the targeted workout again and I've already lost 15 pounds. I recommend this to everyone!
