Review: I'd like to give it three-and-a-half stars, really, or three and a quarter. It has good parts, sweet parts, wise parts, interesting things about Leonard Cohen (as Jikan), funny parts, insights into what it was like to be in the midst of the Kyozan Joshu Sasaki sex scandal, telling pictures of mortality and death.

But what I mostly got from it is that is that being a Zen monk seems to have had very little impact on the author, how he lived his life, how he thought about things, how he treated people. And that seems odd.

An example of that is the author's Dark Night of the Soul when he takes a leave from the monastery to deal with the aftermath of a bout of pancreatitis. He tries weird bacterial remedies suggested by family members, he flies to the coast to visit an old mentor, he visits a Catholic priest, and then, after flailing about for three months, he finally does what you would think would have been the very first thing: he sits with the pain and the feelings, lets them be, observes them in zazen, and that helps some. Hey wow! He just sort of forgot about that for three months? This is hard for me to fathom.

The thing that stuck with me the most, though, was the chapter "Jumping the Wall", in which he sneaks out of the monastery and visits a sex worker. It's painful to read, as he comes off as a complete jerk, and it's not clear to me that he understands just how appalling his behavior was. I mean, maybe it's supposed to be obvious, and the intent is "see how real and human we monks are, we can be jerks to sex workers", but to me it comes off more as "here's this funny story about the time I ripped off a sex worker, and she was OLD, haha, but we bonded at the end because she told me her real name because I am such a wise understanding guy".

I started writing some details of how painful it was, not just the past behavior that he was describing, but also the wording that he chose to describe it later while writing the book. But detail isn't important here, it's the whole attitude; he others her, he describes her in negative objectifying terms, he doesn't pay her what he promised (he has the money, but it's more important that he pay a debt to his teacher than his debt to her OF COURSE), and he promises to come back and make good, but then doesn't, he doesn't want to tell her his name but hopes she will tell him hers, he gets all sanctimonious at the end about how "underneath all carnal desire is a wish to know the world", etc, etc, etc. Gah, that's probably still too much detail.

The entire Part Two of the book (less than half of it, but substantial) is about the sex scandals around his Roshi, Kyozan Joshu Sasaki, and then Roshi's death. This is messy and insightful and painful, if somewhat dominated by how much angst he personally felt about everything (and how little any of his Buddhism apparently helped, if only by omission). But the detailed focus on the Roshi reminded me of how many, many pages Natalie Goldberg spent on Dainin Katagiri after his death, how she remembered him causing plants to be healthier just be entering the room, how his ghost spoke wise things to her, how she never really got over his death, how painful it was when she found out about HIS sexual misbehavior.

I don't think the whole Roshi system does a whole lot for non-clinging! Or for preventing sexual abuse, for that matter. And when people write books that spend many, many pages on details of Roshi's life and/or death and/or sex life, it's a reminder of that.

Review: It is the type of book that is hard to put down. The kind of book that you don't want to end. Just like Shozan's first book, Zen Confidential, his writing is beautiful, eloquent, honest, profound, and profane, hilarious, and tender, deeply touching and moving. His journey is the human journey, my own journey, connecting us all in a way, on many levels. I could recognize myself in his experiences and encounters, both the spiritual and the human seeking that he so very honestly shares on the pages of this beautiful book. Highly recommended!

Review: Hands down one of the best books I've read. Not just on Zen, but in general. Shozan Jack is a human being, he doesn't pretend to be anything else. I had the honor of interviewing him on a podcast recently, and he was just as honest and down-to-earth then as he is on the page. I consider Single White Monk a required read for every Buddhist.

Review: It's one of those books... well, when I finished reading it, the back plate was stuffed with abstracts and associated page references. It is a comprehensive conveyor of the gist of the real thing we wish to find. It's also a wonderful read!
