Title: Disappointing...didn't add much to the series.

Review: I loved the first three Mysterious Benedict Society books, so perhaps my expectations for this book were set too high. But it seemed to me that the author was scraping the bottom of the barrel, trying to eke one more book out of a series that had already reached a good conclusion.
On the plus side: the inclusion of a new member of the Society, a five-year-old boy with lots of energy and enthusiasm (though not much in the way of quirks that made the first four stand out so well in the initial book).
Two relatively small minuses:
1. Maybe I just read too hurriedly, but the puzzles didn't seem as numerous or engaging.
2. A lot of the plot involved a battle of telepaths, and Constance's abilities in that regard were just as weak or strong as Stewart needed them to be at any given point.
Two major minuses:
3. I didn't think there was enough development in the interpersonal relationships. There were some suggestions of deeper issues and changes in the offing, but nothing came of them.
4. A revelation near the end felt like a cheat, inconsistent with everything we had read before. Maybe if I went back and read the book a second time with the ending in mind, I would see that the apparent inconsistencies were all the result of faulty assumptions on my part---but I'm not motivated enough to read it a second time.
I should mention that I"m 62, and I suspect that the issues I have with the book will probably not be objectionable to younger readers. But for myself, I would have been happy to have been warned off and to have just stayed content with memories (and/or re-readings) of the first three books.

Title: Crazy but Good

Review: The book itself was in perfect condition; I loved the protective but not bulky packaging and smell of a fresh book. The shipping was amazing! I pre-ordered it and the book literally arrived the day it came out.
The book. Was. Crazy! I am an avid Mysterious Benedict Society fan and read it in 5 hours (the day it arrived). Some things I loved, some let me down, and some made my brain sound like an old computer; "computing." Trenton Lee Stewart used plot twists in a new way and reunited characters I was dying to see get together!! It was a little confusing, so after my research and reading the book I've concluded that I've a good idea of the character ages. As follows; Connie girl is 8 and the older kids are in the sixteen-year-old range. If anyone is wondering, you should read the prequel, The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict, before reading The Riddle of the Ages.

Title: Not Up to Snuff

Review: I am a huge Trenton Lee Stewart fan, and have waited with great anticipation for this, the 4th book in his series, "The Mysterious Benedict Society" (note: "The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict" isn't part of the series, rather, it is a look back in time at Benedict). In any case, the book, though interesting and certainly delightful with the addition of 5 year old Tai Li, lacked the cleverness of previous novels, as well as lacking the fun interpersonal connections between members of the society. Not that the book is devoid of cleverness, or devoid of personal interactions, it's just that much of the writing is about action and plot. The character development isn't there. Yes, I know the characters and love the characters, but in this novel, they seem to be rather flat. I'm not sure the book would have held my interest were I not already in love with the series. In any case, I'm still a fan of Stewart, I loved his, "The Secret Keepers," and will continue to read anything he writes.

Review: TLDR: Not as good as the previous books, but still worth about 4 hours of your time if you like the series. You do not have to have read the prequel, The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict, but there are a few things that will be more interesting to you if you have. I would also highly recommend reading the main trilogy before reading this book (although you probably guessed as much given that this is book 4).
I read and loved all the previous Mysterious Benedict Society books, and I was thrilled to randomly find out about this newest entry about a month after it came out. However, I just recently decided to get it, and read through the whole book in about 4 hours in one sitting. This makes it about the same length as the other books in the series.
First, the good. It has been about 9 years since book 3 in this series came out, and I appreciate the fact that the Riddle of Ages takes this into account. The characters have gotten older, the world of the MBS series has changed a little, and the members of the MBS are in the process of transitioning from child to adult. While I am a bit past this book's age demographic, this was still a message that spoke to me. I remember going through a lot of the same struggles in my life, during that time when you're not a grownup yet, but not a kid anymore, and you're not really sure how to feel about that.
They are also dealing with the fact that as they are getting older, they're not going to be with each other forever. Each member has their own career path and life plans to pursue, separate from their friends that they've been through so much with. This was also difficult for me to grasp when I was around this age. Us older people tend to forget how difficult this transition is, when we have to realize that our childhood friends that we laughed with, cried with and grew up with are going to go their separate ways, and we aren't going to be spending so much of our lives together. This book hits that message right on the nose.
I also appreciated the way the more action-intense parts were written. There were a lot of moments when I found myself thinking, "uh oh, how are they going to get out of this?" only to read on another paragraph and go, "oh snap I didn't think of that!" This is the type of action that was present in the previous books, and I'm glad to see it's still here.
Now, the bad. The plot of this book kind of falls flat as compared to the other entries in the series. Part of the problem here is that book 3 did such a great job of tying up all the loose ends with an "and they all lived happily ever after" type of ending. Which I loved, but the problem is when you want to do a sequel to that, to some degree you have to go back and undo that ending.
A lot of the major plot points (especially in the last quarter of the book or so) come off as "well, I need to do something to create a conflict here, so let's bend over backwards to come up with an explanation". Some character's motivations and abilities have changed from the last book to now, without a very good explanation of why, other than "because the plot needs to go in this direction". It feels less organic, and more stilted than the previous entries.
I've seen a few people comment that they felt that the characters are "flatter" and less developed than in the previous books. I agree. Part of the problem here is that with the start and continuation of the original Society, it's easier to have your characters growing and changing as characters, because you're still in the middle of the narrative arc. Where this book takes place, the characters have already grown and developed their talents, so you don't have as much space for them to grow farther.
Also, a lot of the other characters such as Mr. Benedict and Milligan are also only really used in passing, so you don't get to know them or see their character development like you do in the previous books.
The puzzles, such as they are, also didn't come off as clever or well-designed as the previous books, in my opinion anyway. However, I will give the author a pass here since with older characters, the puzzles kind of had to become more obtuse and difficult to make sense. A riddle that would be tricky for a twelve-year-old would probably be a snap for a sixteen or seventeen-year-old, especially ones as smart as these! I just didn't like them nearly as well as the ones from the previous books.
Overall, I still enjoyed this book, though. If you're a fan of the Mysterious Benedict Society, I think this book deserves 4 to 5 hours of your time. As long as you go into it without expecting as much as the other entries, I think you'll still like it. If you haven't read this series yet, I would start with the prequel, The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict, then read books 1, 2 and 3, then this one.
