OpenMP was created in 1997 to make it as simple as possible for applications programmers to write parallel code; since then, it has grown into a huge and complex system. After introducing the fundamental concepts of parallel computing and history of OpenMP's development, the book covers topics including the core design pattern of parallel computing, the parallel and worksharing-loop constructs, the OpenMP data environment, and tasks. Review: As you may or may not know, Microsoft Visual C++ still only supports OpenMP 2.5 (or 2.0, if you prefer). So the Common Core of OpenMP is really all they support. This book is a wonderful learning tool and a good reference.

Review: First, I do recommend this book. It contains the essentials for the novice and there is material beyond the “common core” to make it worthwhile for the more experienced code developer. Second, this book has room for improvement. I will start with the positives and follow that with some of the “problems” that I found in the book.It was great to see a glossary. More technical books need them.Chapter 9 was a good overall review / reference chapter. It contains the right amount of material. Readers who are familiar with OpenMP, but haven’t used it in a while may want to first give this a skim. In whole, the book has the right amount of material to get the novice up and working. I’ve used OpenMP before and was able to learn a lot from this book.A big positive for me was that after reading the book, I came away with a better understanding of how OpenMP works with the computer hardware and operating system. This was primarily attributed to Chapters 4, 8, and 11. Chapters 8 & 11 probably should be read by inexperienced developers more than once to grasp all the subtleties. I found these 2 chapters to contain interesting and informative content.A big problem with this book is that there are too many contributors and no author has taken ownership to ensure that the technical content is correct to the smallest detail and that the grammar is correct and the tone of the book is consistent. It is interesting that successful code development demands writing code requiring emphasis on every single character being correct, but the same people that can do this well can’t do the same when writing a book explaining their craft. What this book needed was a technically competent reviewer who has a technical training background and knows how to explain things clearly and fully. This is someone who has the knack to read a sentence and know what one or two words need to be added, removed, or re-arranged to make the light bulb go off without requiring the reader to re-parse the sentence. The problem with experts reviewing a work is that they know too much and often gloss over little things that are important to the “not-so expert” grasping the material with a minimal amount of effort. If there was a copy editor reviewing this work, they failed in their job. However, I have seen other technical books that were far worse in this regard than this one.Given what I’ve stated in the previous paragraph, I found the writing to be mediocre. Some word choices are really poor. Sentence structure is clunky in many places.Figures and tables would have benefited from a better choice of fonts and a more distinctive layout. Code should always be presented in a fixed font! That would have fixed some formatting issues in the book. Often the figure discussions were too long and just repeated what was in the text.One of the big disappointments in this book was the lack of guidance and examples on how to use OpenMP with C++ classes. (Do I really need to point out that people do write compute intensive object-oriented code?) All of the examples are fairly simple ones with sequential, toy code. This presents a knowledge gap on how to get up and running with classes. At least some mention of where to find more useful information on this topic would be appreciated by this reviewer.Early on the authors introduced code to time the parallel parts of the examples, but always included some serial code in the timing section. This should not introduce much difference, but why be so sloppy?Chapter 2 needs a better discussion of weak scaling with some examples. Discussion on the Roofline Model needs some work / more detail. I’m skipping mentioning other problems I found in these early chapters.The Chapter 6 discussion on dynamic arrays and pointers left me hanging because there was not enough detail; this could have benefited from a concrete example.The Chapter 7 explanation on how threads consume tasks was muddled. It wasn’t until much later in the chapter that I figured out how this happens. The early discussion in the chapter should be clearer about this.In Chapter 8, a correct solution to the problems in Figure 8.3 needs to be presented in its own figure; the text is inadequate in describing this. The solution to the problem in Figure 8.5 was not shown in the chapter; the discussion needs to reference by section or page number where this is later in the book.In Chapter 10, Section 10.1.2 is too long and needs 3 sub-sections. There are a number of errors associated with the discussion of Figure 10.3. The discussion on use of the collapse clause is not entirely clear w.r.t. setting its parameters. Figure 10.8 shows outdated Fortran circa 1977; nobody writing modern Fortran would use a common block!The reduction in Figure 11.6 is not thread safe.Section 12.2 is a somewhat confusing section. This section lacks an introduction that discusses what is to be accomplished here; it is not until midway through the section does the reader get an understanding of the purpose. It is interesting to see the vector intrinsics, but the discussion doesn’t put this in proper perspective from the beginning. The vector intrinsics discussion w.r.t. the figures is somewhat confusing, but could easily be made clearer. The section discusses compromised vectorization, but doesn’t offer any hint of solution for the example. Table 12.2 lacks a case for un-auto (non) vectorized results; it would have been worthwhile for readers to see the difference. Also, the table is really not put in proper perspective — all results are within roughly a factor of 2.Section 12.3 on device constructs fails to mention that the compiler must support “devices” and could require that the compiler be rebuilt with the correct options to allow off-loading.Section 13.2 is entitled “How to Read the OpenMP Specification”. A better title would have been “Help in Understanding the OpenMP Specification Terminology” or “Clarification of the OpenMP Specification Terminology”.The discussion on page 271 about construct groups and binding is not clear at all.
