Secuela de los acontecimientos narrados en Sonic 2, la película, basada en el exitoso videojuego. El filme sigue, de nuevo, las aventuras del famoso erizo de Sega junto a los humanos Tom y Maddie, y su nuevo amigo y compañero Tails. El final de la segunda parte y su escena post-créditos revelan quién podría ser el próximo antagonista: Shadow. El erizo negro Shadow, que se parece mucho a Sonic, se mueve por la ira y la venganza. Y aunque Sonic cree que puede ayudarle con el poder de la amistad, como hizo con su amigo Knuckles, esta vez no funcionará. También hay referencias al experimento genético Proyecto Shadow, a partir del cual se creó Shadow, y a la organización militar G.U.N. El principal enemigo de Sonic en las películas anteriores era el Dr. Robotnik, cuyo actor Jim Carrey anunció recientemente su retirada. Por lo tanto, es más que dudoso que regrese para la tercera parte, por lo que Shadow podría cobrar mayor importancia en la secuela.
