Just going out for dinner isn't special enough for a 50th birthday, so instead plan something a bit more adventurous or out of the ordinary. When I'm buying someone a birthday gift, I try to choose something that they wouldn't ordinarily buy for themselves—so that it feels more like a treat or indulgence. I suggest taking the same approach when choosing a group activity to celebrate their birthday. Plan something you think they'll enjoy, but is not something they do often or have ever done before! This will create unique memories associated with their milestone birthday! Personally, I hate to split these into 'ideas for men' and 'ideas for women'—which seems so sexist—but unfortunately most people tend to search for birthday ideas by gender. Celebrate the Person, not their Age As I mentioned above, I hate milestone birthday parties that focus solely on poking fun at the person's age. Instead, make the guest of honour feel special and loved. Whether they let on or not, it's probably going to be a time of reflection for them as they consider their life and their accomplishments so far. So surround them with close friends and family to help them celebrate and share special memories. A few jokes about getting older is fine to keep things light-hearted, but don't make it the main theme of the party—that joke wears off very quickly. Instead, make the party as personal as you can and highlight all their positive achievements, like family, children, or career highlights, so that they have fond memories of their 50th birthday party. You want it to be something they'll remember. Above all, remember to celebrate the person, not just their age! As you'll see below, there are plenty of clever ways to still incorporate the big 50 into the party theming and decorations without it dominating. Instead, your focus should be on making it personal. I came across these photos below and thought this idea would make a great 50th birthday card or gift. Have friends and family spell out a birthday message by having each person hold up a sign with one letter or word on it. Just Google 'printable letters' to find some free templates that you can email to friends and family. Ask them to color their letter in you might want to tell everyone which color to choose , take a photo against a light colored wall, and then email it back to you to arrange into one image. While you could to create a unique birthday card, I think these type of sentimental and thoughtful photographs are a bit wasted just on cards. If you've made the effort to create something special like this, think about turning it into a canvas print which you could then frame as a birthday gift —you can. I came across a number of these types of photos online, where people are photographed holding up individual signs to express different sentiments. You don't even have to get friends and family members together to produce this. Instead you could ask each person to take their own and email it to you. Then, collect all the images in a personalized photo book using one image per page to create an entire book of reasons they're loved by friends and family. Just remember to give everyone the same instructions if you want each page of the book to have some consistency e. Of course the images don't have to all use a consistent style—different photos are just as fun. But I would remind anyone using a cameraphone to take theirs to make sure their camera settings are on the highest possible resolution to take the best quality photo for printing. These feature additional design motifs and text boxes, so if you can't arrange for everyone to take a custom photo in time, you can have people email you the sentiments and you can type this directly into the book and attribute it to them alongside any picture that's easier for you to source. Who writes personal letters anymore? That's what makes this idea so special. Similar to the ' 50 Messages from 50 Friends' idea above, , focuses more on memories and friendships, rather than just birthday greetings, to celebrate '50 Years of Memories'. Have friends write a one page letter to the birthday boy or girl that recalls a memory they share—perhaps something funny about how they first met or something that really cemeted their friendship—the more nostalgic the better. Tell people it's fine to get a little gushy and sentimental—but humor works too! That's what will make this really touching. The slideshow can be as humorous, embarrassing, touching, or sentimental as you like—in fact a bit of everything works really well. I guarantee that this sort of gift will be extremely appreciated and provides a great focal point at the party for everyone to share in. These personalized photo books are another great way to celebrate a 50 years in pictures. Rather than just creating one using your own photos, contact friends and family and ask everyone to send you a photo of the birthday boy or girl from their own photo collection—along with a short memory about the photo summed up in a few sentences. You could even contact people at the same time as asking them to write a letter for the '50 Years of Memories' above, so that you get memories as both words and photographs. Update: Lots of people have emailed me asking where they can buy something similar to the jar pictured above so below are a few I've come accross click on any of the images below to see more about each one. The advantage of the two filled jars and the filled glass block pictured below is that you can email over the messages to be printed onto each scroll which will then be rolled and hand-tied, whereas the empty jar pictured below comes with blank cards for you to write your own. I love the way the graduation banners in the photo below left really frame the entrance to the party. There are lots of different vertical photo collage templates that you can customize with your own text and color scheme, depending on how many photos you want to include. For the 3 photo template below , or for the 10 photo option below note this was actually a 12 photo template, I just removed 2 and repositioned the text. Click 'Personalize' to add your photos or scroll down to under the final photo to 'Click to customize further' to change colors and text layout. The reason I love the banners above is that you can add multiple photos from different stages of the persons life to each banner. However, another way you can go about it is to customize these milestone birthday banners one at a time with a different photo of the birthday boy or girl. These banners are a little more straightforward to customize and are part of a collection of matching 50th birthday party decorations and tableware, in case you want everything to look the same. These half-body photo yard signs are also a fun way to decorate the route leading up to the entrance of your party. It's another great way to use old photos of the birthday boy or girl through the year, perhaps with children or other family members. These rose petal aisle runners, customized with either a number or letter monogram or plain are a great way to line the entrance to a milestone birthday, especially if you're holding it in a hotel, venue, or function room that might need a little decoration to liven it up. People tend to only think of aisle runners for weddings, but they're actually a really quick and easy way to spruce up any party entrance. This will create a focal point in the room. Decorations often have to compete with existing room decor so they can get a bit lost if spread too thinly. You can then use a few general decorations around the rest of the room to tie everything together. If you want a freestanding backdrop structure you can then apply the finished print to, you can pick a 8ft x 8ft backdrop board. They come in 5 different sizes, but for a backdrop you probably want the large or extra large shown below. All the designs can be customized with your choice of text and font. I came across these photos of a 60th birthday party, below left, where they'd created a lovely 'Through the Years' style backdrop using photos of the birthday girl at different stages in her life. These photo collage style tapestry would make creating something similar really easy—as you can see in the mock up I created below 'Celebrating Eighty'. There are other photo collage tapestries available that you could also customize, such as this 'Story of Us' example, below right. This photo collage idea, below left by Kami at , was actually to celebrate her parents 50th wedding anniversary, but I think it would work well as a wall display or dessert table backdrop for a 50th birthday party too. This approach is much more personal and fits in nicely with the idea of celebrating the person, rather than just their age. I particularly like the way the photos are mounted onto a chalkboard, which allows you to add more personalized scribbles surrounding the photos. You can achieve this look by using , or even chalkboard paint. You could stick photos to them, paint them with chalkboard paint for guest to write messages on, or decorate them however you want. I came across this timeline-style photo collage and thought this would also make a lovely way to celebrate the birthday boy or girl through the years. You could display this as part of your party decorations or give it framed as a birthday gift. I came accross this tutorial for how to make a balloon chandelier for a bridal shower on and it gave me an idea for a fun way to customize this for a 50th birthday party. This a great way to add a personal touch to the party decorations. Personally, I think balloon arrangements look more chic and sophisticated when you use just one color of balloon, such as or these. You can also make these glow by popping one of inside. You could also pop an LED balloon light into each one, available from the same supplier, and, as before, consider making the balloons all one color. I like the way they used them as decorations and it gives party guests something to do early on while waiting for everyone else to arrive. Alternatively, you can have various posters containing facts about the year of their birth personalized. Many of these, , are printable files so you can print as many off as you want and use them as party decorations. These often work well when presented on an easel, as in the photo below right, and displayed anywhere there might be a line, such as near the bar, coatcheck, buffet table, bathrooms etc or at the entrance to the party. Lots of people do this for kid's birthday parties, but it can be quite fun to do for a 50th birthday party because guests often won't have seen pictures of them as a baby, toddler, child, teenager, student, etc. You're probably better off scanning any original photos and printing copies off onto cardstock using your home printer so as not to risk them getting damaded. These smaller letter balloons are great for decorating walls by spelling out different phrases. As you can see from the photos below, Jordan from Oh Happy Day is a master at creating quirky phrases using these. These photo lanterns were created by for a client's 60th, but it's the type of party decoration that could be used for any milestone birthday. If that's all a bit too crafy for you, you can buy something similar; a set of printed cardboard stacking photocubes, below,. This would be a far more cost-effective and easy option, but the downside is that they're smaller and not illuminated. Alternatively, you could take a slightly different approach and scatter clusters of these smaller plastic photo cubes on bars and table tops. You can easily recreate this look with these custom photo collage lampshades other styles available ,. If you're setting up a dessert or buffet table, position two lamps you already own—one at each end—with these custom shades to add height to your display with a really personal touch. Update: Check out these photo collage lampshades , they have different sizes and some of the smaller ones might work out more cost-effective. These 'Biggest Fan' big head cut outs are typically used for sporting and homecoming events, but I think they could be used as decorations for a 50th birthday party. You can buy either a selection box for a particular decade or individual candies. If you're choosing a decades pack, remember to think about what year they would have been around 8-10 years old. For example, if they were born in 1978, you're probably better off getting a 1980's selection box as they'll have more memories of those candies than of ones where they were only 2 years old.
