This misalignment was caused because I tightened the backplate and boss screws to the top part of the slide e. So I removed the plate at end of the bed and was able to pull the tailstock off. Some of the threads on the 4-jaw were pitted and chipped, so I cleaned them up with a small file.

I have no idea how good or otherwise it is, but it was widely available on eBay so I guess it is at least commonly used. Rebuild and lubrication My engineering-type friend Rob recommended giving everything except the ways a coat of silicon spray. Purchase I looked at micro-lathes which were around 23kg, including the Seig C1 and the Taig Micro-Lathe 2.

Hobbymat MD65 needs assistance to start - However, I had a niggling doubt about distance between centres — I wanted to turn threads or circlip grooves into aluminium engine casings, which I expected to be about 300mm long — this is out of reach of all of the micro-lathes. The guy I bought it off owned it for two years but used it only twice.

He very kindly gave it to me as he is not in the best of health. The machine looks hardly used and I wish to give it a bit of an overhaul. Does anyone know if this is hhobbymat major hobbymat or is there an easy fix? I am assuming the motor is a fixed speed induction motor. Based on bfe665 assumption I suspect the contacts on the reversing switch which connect the start winding in the forward direction are faulty. I cannot find a wiring diagram on the web to tell you which connections on bfe65 switch to check. If you have the manual I think that contains the wiring diagram. If so then if you scan it in and attach it to your next post I will be able to tell you which contacts to check. I found a link on the web to a site that you could download a copy from, but that has since expired. Many thanks in anticipation, and well done lads for bfe65 Clives problem. And yes, any attempt at cutting threads without the mod is pretty hairy - to the extent that I've only hobbymat manual it once. But screwcutting is manual not one of their strong points unless you fit the low-speed mod, and I would have thought that using some sort of retractable tool would be quite a good idea too.
I was not sure how to clean the ways, which on this lathe is a solid block of round steel with a flat milled on top. There is also a Yahoo Group for these lathes:. The previous owner was a big fan of grease — white, grey, black. I used pipe cleaners and a small bottle brush to clean out the holes. I worked around with a small screwdriver, and the clip was off. America they were generally badged as Prazi — hence the Prazi connection. Thanks for the info, looks like its grease i need to be using as its the geared head. There is good info in the archives of both groups, but new posts should into the active group. Incidentally, I'm assuming you likewise have the geared head — the later Mark2 Hobbymat had a belt-driven arrangement for which the lubrication regime may be different. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
