About the Author
Frédéric Delavier is a gifted artist with an exceptional knowledge of human anatomy. He studied morphology and anatomy for five years at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied dissection for three years at the Paris Faculté de Médecine.
The former editor in chief of the French magazine PowerMag, Delavier wrote for several fitness publications, including the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle, Men's Health Germany, and Ironman. He is the author of the best-selling Strength Training Anatomy, Women’s Strength Training Anatomy, The Strength Training Anatomy Workout, Delavier's Core Training Anatomy, and Delavier's Stretching Anatomy.
Delavier won the French powerlifting title in 1988 and gives worldwide presentations on the sport applications of biomechanics. His teaching efforts have earned him the Grand Prix de Techniques et de Pédagogie Sportive. Delavier lives in Paris, France.
Michael Gundill has written 13 books on strength training, sport nutrition, and health, including coauthoring The Strength Training Anatomy Workout and The Strength Training Anatomy Workout II. His books have been translated into multiple languages, and he has written over 500 articles for bodybuilding and fitness magazines worldwide, including Iron Man and Dirty Dieting. In 1998 he won the Article of the Year Award at the Fourth Academy of Bodybuilding Fitness & Sports Awards in California.
Gundill started weightlifting in 1983 in order to improve his rowing performance. Most of his training years were spent completing specific lifting programs in his home. As he gained muscle and refined his program, he began to learn more about physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics and started studying those subjects in medical journals. Since 1995 he has been writing about his discoveries in various bodybuilding and fitness magazines worldwide.

Review: I was skeptical about buying this book but I was not disappointed. I’ve had it for a month and I chose to do the three day weekly workouts. What I changed, tho, is splitting each day in to two...lower half on one day then the upper on following day. When I’ve completed the full three days I go back to day 1 and start again. I also incorporated cardio every other day.
So after 30 days in I am 11 1/2” smaller from top of bust to thighs with biceps increasing in size. Another week or two and the heavy lifting will begin.
I am a 61 year old grandmom and as age began to set in, I was feeling depressed and just plain didn’t like myself I realized a change was needed. It is never too late to get moving.
This book is well worth it. You see what muscles are being used, the proper technique to use as well as picking which routine to use.

Review: Let me start by saying that I have some experience weight lifting and have performed many of these exercises but I don't workout everyday and I certainly don't go to the gym as often as I'd like. The honest truth of it is that I had so many questions and there is so much information out there that it's a bit overwhelming.
With that in mind this book is fantastic! It is everything I could have ever asked (and I am tremendously inquisitive) and more. I have spent hours on days on weeks on months on YouTube and google trying to gather information and put pieces together to "do weight lifting right" so to speak. This book clearly lays everything out just perfectly. From how many sets to do, how often to train, reps , a breakdown of every muscle and how to build them. I mean I'm ranting now but I could go on and on about this book.
As for the one star review that finds this book condescending, I have to disagree. I didnt find anything about this book to be insulting and I actually find the humor he uses keeps me reading.
I have NEVER read a workout book cover to cover and I cant seem to put this one down, I feel 100% confident at the gym because I truly feel like I understand things now.
For the record I was not at all influenced to give this review, this is just a really good buy for women who don't quite know how to fit together all the pieces of weight training.

Review: The descriptions in the book on how to do each exercise are excellent. There are three parts to the book. The first section has information on developing your training program like increasing intensity, preventing injury, keeping a workout notebook and more.
The middle section has the actual exercises. Both drawn illustrations and photographs of people doing the exercise are used. I like they include the photographs. The illustrations are nice to see the muscles involved. The final section that helped me was sample programs for beginners, advanced and circuit training.
For a person who knew she wanted to lift weights to build strenght but had no idea what she was doing or how to do it correctly, this book has really helped.

Title: Problematic writing but good anatomy and work out info

Review: I was hesitant to buy a book for women written by a man, and unfortunately, I should have gone with my hesitation. The writing is, like others have said, very condescending. I also cringed every time the author wrote hat certain exercises can lead to a sexy body and that many women work out to get sexy. The introduction alone made me want to throw up. This may be news to some people, but women don't work out just for aesthetic reasons. Some women work out to get strong and to feel empowered.
I will say that if you ignore the author's moderately misogynistic writing, it does have good information about anatomy and strength training. That's the only reason why it has 2 stars instead of 1. There are other books out there though that would have the same information without the cringey side notes from the author.

Review: Wow, Mr. Delavier has an issue with women. I was on the second page of "Part II - Exercises" when I encountered this gem: "Wearing high heels will alter your posture, rendering your silhouette more attractive." In case I missed what he meant, there was a drawing with red lines highlighting EXACTLY what parts would look better with me in heels. Golly, why wouldn't I think he had my health in mind with that intro? There is a lot of useful information here, but it's all couched in the "do this an you'll look sexy" tone. The drawings are a good example: they provide a lot of information but they also feel porny. Why do the women in them wear thongs? Why do they have "come faces" as they bend over equipment with various types of restraints on their legs and arms? Creepy! I had to pitch the thing, because the drawings are on every page and I just got tired of dealing with Mr. Delavier's attitude about . . . me!
