When I first met the developers making Deepworld, which is a 2D Sandbox-style game of building similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I informed them that the project would be much bigger than they thought. They have a lot of experience in the development of software and servers, but running a game this big requires a significant investment. It looks like they now are in agreement. Minecraftservers has inspired the idea of a Kickstarter project to try and raise funds early for servers and development.

The group is offering several prizes to its supporters such as your personal servers and worlds, art books and other items, and the possibility of getting your own items, name, or even pictures in the game itself. The goal is to raise US$20,000 and the group has already raised approximately $4,000. They say they want to take the project on full-time and this money will allow them to accomplish that goal.

I hope they have a great time. Deepworld looks great, and I agree with you when I first saw it. I think that the Mac (and iOS) would greatly benefit from a game like that.
