Chronic pelvic pain can be caused by problems with the reproductive organs, such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Other causes include scar tissue after surgery or an infection in the pelvic area. Urinary tract diseases and other problems with the muscles, joints or ligaments in the pelvic area may also cause pain.

A doctor can tell the cause of your pain by examining you and asking questions. They may do a pelvic examination and other tests, such as blood and urine testing to look for infections. They can also do a laparoscopy or pelvic ultrasound, or a pap smear to look for changes in your cervical cells that could be cancerous.

Your doctor will treat your pain with a combination of treatments, which depends on the cause of your pelvic pain. Treatment for a pelvic pain caused by a condition, such as endometriosis or adenomyosis, might include birth control pills, hormone therapy and antibiotics to treat any infection.

If your pain is caused by a growth or cyst in the ovaries, or by a tumour, your doctor will recommend surgery to remove it. They might also prescribe medicines, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Some women with chronic pelvic pain have symptoms like a frequent need to urinate and bladder pain. The pain may be due to a condition called interstitial cystitis.

Physical therapies such as physiotherapy can help to relieve your pelvic pain and other symptoms. They can help you relax your muscles and improve your posture.
