Grunge is remembered for Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. His face still stares out from T-shirts; their songs are still learnt by beginner guitarists. But another strain of grunge was also prominent in the 1990s. It looked to classic rock, not Black Sabbath. Its attitude was earnest, not cynical. Its members included platinum-selling bands such as Stone Temple Pilots. In Pearl Jam’s case, the sales outstripped even those of Nirvana, at least in the US, where their debut album Ten sold more than Nirvana’s Nevermind.

Cobain derided Pearl Jam as “corporate puppets”. But he was wrong. That would have made them cynics. Instead, Eddie Vedder and his bandmates went about their business as though upholding a sacred flame. Decades before present concerns about ticket prices, they fought Ticketmaster to keep gigs affordable. While alt-rock became corporatised, they treated rock music as a way of life. It was a fuzzy kind of idealism — but idealism nonetheless.
