The early counts were linked to the monastery of Rastede, to the north of what later developed as the town of Oldenburg, which was founded in 1059 by Count Huno according to the Historia Monasterii Rastedensis. In the same source, Huno's county is called Rustringen, which has not yet been identified precisely but which presumably covered the territory along the North Sea coast to the east of Frisia.
