Review

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES!

A Publishers Weekly Bestseller (Supernova)

Praise for RENEGADES

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!!

A Winter 2017-2018 Kids' Indie Next List Selection

"In a vividly dark and fully imagined universe where special abilities are feared unless they can be strictly controlled and labeled, Meyer celebrates and subverts popular superhero tropes while mining the gray area between malevolence and virtue. Third-person narration builds suspense as it shifts between Nova and Adrian, a Renegade with his own secrets; the worldbuilding details and many combat sequences will captivate devotees of superhero comics. Beyond the capes and masks is a strikingly grounded story of star-crossed would-be lovers, deception, and the recognition that most of humanity exists between the extremes of good and evil."--Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Tackles a familiar genre in a brand new way."--Hypable.com

"A fully realized new world with compelling characters and just enough edge-of-your-seat action to rival the biggest on-screen adaptation?."--Bustle

"Exciting...perfect for your Fall #TBR list."--PopSugar.com

"Even reluctant fans of hero fantasies will fall for the smart plot and wonderful world-building. Prepare to fangirl."--Justine Magazine

"Meyer delivers a balance between intricate world-building and fast-paced action sequences. Nova’s childhood tragedy will draw sympathy from readers as they watch her integrate into the group of Renegades in order to seek vengeance. Back-stabbing, plot twists, and hidden agendas will have readers turning pages in an attempt to discover the truth."--School Library Journal

"Meyer smartly refrains from focusing totally on Adrian and Nova’s potential romance and instead fleshes the characters out as separate individuals with flaws and strengths, regrets and desires. ...The world is exceptionally well crafted, particularly the complex backstory of the rise of prodigies among humans, and the secondary cast of villains and heroes could give Marvel and DC a run for their money. There’s a lot going on here besides cool names and superpowers, and the book earns both its hefty page count and its expected sequel."--Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Recommended

Title: Marissa Meyer holds nothing back in this epic conclusion to the Renegades trilogy.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2019
Review: This book was excellent. Absolutely excellent. It is the type of book that has you double-checking how much is left and feeling relieved that you’re only a quarter of the way in because you don’t want it to end. The writing is fantastic and flows so well. The ending is climatic and satisfying. Marissa Meyer holds nothing back in this epic conclusion to the Renegades trilogy.

Supernova picks up the story in the aftermath of Nightmare’s heist. Nova is walking on thin ice with her treachery precariously close to being discovered, Max’s life is on the line from the dire injuries sustained by Frostbite, and Adrian is furious and fueled to capture Nightmare once and for all. Once again, Nova is caught between the budding friendships of the Renegades and the loyalty to her rag tag family as she pursues a way to free Ace, stop Agent N, finally bring a sense of peace to the world. If only her heart could figure out the right way to do it. If only Adrian would stop hunting Nightmare. If only she knew the truth. Powers, lives, and loyalties are gained and lost in this thrilling conclusion.

Title: Mostly a wonderfully, fantastic read

Review: If I could give this book 4 1/2 stars I would. Amazon does not live in a world of half stars, so here we are. I have been highly anticipating this book, and pre-ordered it after I finished the last one. To say I am a Marissa Meyer "fan" would be an understatement. I love all of her books, own them, and read them often. I don't know if I am in her typical demographic- a 32-year-old mom with 5 children- but certain aspects of her books really speak to me because of my background (the family loyalty, trying to figure who you are individually in all of that, value of an individual vs. safety of a group as a whole, etc...).

First off, there are many things that I loved about this book. Meyer does a phenomenal job of writing action scenes, and the feelings that characters go through while experiencing through them. When I was growing up, my dad would always laugh when we would read these intense action scenes in a story, only to be interrupted by the main character stopping to explain the vanilla scent of someone's hair or how the dress/suit hugged their curves, etc... Meyers does a tasteful job of balancing action and character development, and it doesn't feel forced.

I also loved the diversity of the characters, and how that diversity helps them all work together- there are concepts like your background doesn't define you, but it helps you develop strength, compassion, and bravery. I also love that this book addresses the idea of "hero" and "villain" being a lot more complicated than we think. Things in life are not clear, and people can change and make better choices, or not. Also, who is a hero and who is a villain anyway? There are lots of great thoughts that are important, especially in today's political climate and world as a whole.

I am also a fan of so many strong female and male characters in this novel. It's okay for men to be emotional. It is okay for females to be incredibly strong. It is okay to feel confused and not sure of what you want or where you want to go. Meyer portrays this this well in many of her books, but I wanted to point that out here.

I really don't want to post SPOILERS, since the book just came out yesterday. So I will try to be as vague as I can with this part of the review. Still, there may accidentally be some SPOILERS, so read this part at your own caution. My main issue with the book is the ending. I felt that it was too...neat. This could be a preference thing, though. I know some authors like to leave vague endings so that you can infer what happens, and I understand that. However, I felt the whole book was leading up to what a better society should look like, but then never really answered the question of what that type of society was. At least with the Lunar Chronicles Cinder explains what she planning on doing after the series ends. Here, you don't get the same thing. I guess the last chapter discusses one character's view of what could be, but that wasn't quite satisfying enough for me. Maybe I just want the answer of what a utopian society really is, and was hoping that Meyer could answer that for me, which may be too big of a request since we haven't even figured that out as a society yet.

Or, possibly, are we getting set up for another series where that question will be better answered? One can only hope. 😉 I don't feel like I am quite ready to leave this world- it is certainly a very interesting one. Can we please have graphic novels following Magpie?! I know I can't be the only one thinking this. Hopefully it happens!

Overall, this book was well done, and I plan to read it multiple times as I wait for Marissa Meyer's next series. The Lunar Chronicles did not disappoint, and the Renegade series was just as captivating. Thanks for making this SAHM's life a little more delightful this week! ♥️

Title: I feel like this series could have been two books instead of three
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020
Review: While I enjoyed reading SUPERNOVA, I really do feel like this series should have been two books. There was so much that happened in SUPERNOVA that I would have liked to see earlier on, likely in ARCHENEMIES, and it would have solved the issue that while ARCHENEMIES was also enjoyable, I didn't feel like enough really happened plot-wise to have it be a book of its own. Thinking about the series overall, I think a lot could have been cut down and condensed into two books. There were also a few moments where the pacing just felt odd, like some really long battle scenes, and I ended up losing focus.

The epilogue was definitely a stunner but... it was another thing that I really wanted to be in the second book and the open-ended question that's leftover could have been resolved in this book. I think that would have added nice depth to the plot and added a nice grab/twist in the second book because I really don't feel like there was much memorable about it, as entertaining as it was. I also wished I had more time to enjoy the contents of the epilogue. To be honest, I really don't want to continue this story any more so I'm actually hoping there ISN'T a spin-off. Not in a bad way, but I feel like a new series wouldn't offer a new enough plot and I don't want to continue the good vs. evil concept in a new series because I feel like too many of the same themes would be repeated.

I didn't really feel like I was waiting for too many answers in SUPERNOVA. I wanted to know what Phobia's backstory was (and we do find out and it is really cool) but that was just about it. Basically I kind of figured there would be a happy ending, which isn't a bad thing, but there were a few things that wrapped up a little too neatly. I felt like for everything that happened, Adrian and Nova ended up being all lovey-dovey a little too easily for all of the secrets and betrayals. There were some cool things that happened in the end to wrap things up but then a couple things unfolded that just felt a little TOO nice and neat. Some of the ending just kind of seemed to nullify the whole series? And start the cycle all over again.

I enjoyed the whole series and I had fun reading it but I don't think it's something I need to reread in the future. I enjoyed the original superhero story and I had fun spending time with these characters but I actually felt like the plot could have been improved upon and it lacked the connection that I've felt with other Marissa Meyer books.

Title: Sadness and Regret, Potential Unfulfilled
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2019
Review: The first two books in this series are fantastic. Imaginative storytelling, a genius plot, deception, romance. Truly awesome.

However, if the first two books are a symphony, the third book is a brass band falling down a staircase. What. The. Heck. None of the characters make rational choices for their personalities. Plot holes big enough you could drive a car through. It is nonsensical in plot and character development-reversal-development. The captivating intrigue that defines the first two books somehow becomes both boring, repetitive AND needlessly convoluted.

Last but not least, basic spelling and grammatical errors are pervasive. Are we sure this is the correct edition??
