1. FC Saarbrucken is a German football club based in Saarbrücken, Saarland. The club plays in the 3. Liga, the third tier of German football. They are one of the most successful clubs in the history of the Regionalliga West/Südwest, having won the league seven times. The club has also won the Saarland Cup on three occasions.The club was founded in 1903 as 1. Fußball-Club Saarbrücken and has undergone several name changes over the years. The team first reached prominence after winning the regional Westkreis-Liga in 1929 and went on to win their first Saarland championship in 1949. In 1957, they reached the final of the DFB-Pokal, Germany's premier knockout cup competition, but lost 2–1 to Hamburger SV. This resulted in their qualification for the European Cup Winners' Cup for 1958–59, where they were eliminated by Barcelona in the semi-finals after a controversial refereeing decision.In 1967–68, they had another excellent run in the DFB-Pokal, reaching the semi-finals before being Eliminated by Eintracht Frankfurt after a replay.
