Book Information
The #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling series soars into the most dangerous part of the dragon world yet: a jungle full of carnivorous plants, poisonous trees, and deadly secrets.

It's no secret that Sundew wants to destroy the HiveWings. It's her life's mission to exact revenge on the tribe that tried to wipe out her tribe, the LeafWings, and ripped every tree from the surface of Pantala.

Every tree, that is, except the wild and dangerous Poison Jungle, where the surviving LeafWings have been hiding since the war. Hiding, plotting, and waiting for a dragon like Sundew, who is uniquely qualified to bring down the Hives.

There are dark secrets in the jungle, though -- some that Sundew is keeping, and some that she's only just beginning to discover. And now that a new war is upon them, Sundew and her friends must unearth the oldest secret in the jungle -- even if what they find has the power to destroy them all.

Title: SUCH A GREAT BOOK!

Review: I adore this POV, it was a great book with so many plot-twists! I have no idea why all these parents are saying "oh no a LESBIAN RELATIONSHIP??? How innapropriate and sad!" Now listen i get that you have your own beliefs but like... for real? Did you forget about, dragons sizzling from venom, a humans head being bitten off, a dragon being thrown into a lava pit, etc? Smh.

Title: Representation Matters
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2019
Review: My imaginary child, Karen, came into my room one night, crying because of all the straight relationships happening in this book. Why should the straight people have to go pushing their outdated, political heterosexual agenda down people's throats? I took the book away from Karen and tossed it into the trash, instead of donating it to a library for someone else to read. To be honest, Karen wasn't really crying over the book, but because I took the book away and raised such a stink about it. It's all the gross heteros' fault, not my narrowmindedness. I had no problem with all the magic, war, slaughter, blood, burning, and other violent things, but the political heterosexual agenda has gone too far. Karen is so upset by all the straight people and traumatized by my outburst (but again, totally not my fault) that she wants to speak to the publishing manager!

All joking aside, as I had actually bought, read and listened to the book... While a couple scenes did get a little mushy at times (this happened with the straight characters and couples too, in the previous books), I still found it great that an LGBT couple was officially introduced into the series, even with the occasional ones hinted in the previous books. The dragon friends didn't even question or ridicule when one introduces the other as her girlfriend, which is a huge plus. In this day and age where sexuality and gender have become more open, kids who are questioning their preferences can have someone they can relate to. Love is love, regardless of gender (and consent). Kids should never have to feel ashamed or "disappointed" over a same sex relationship. I grew up in a mostly conservative household, but became more open about LGBT issues and discovering my bisexuality as I became an adult. I often wonder what it would've been like if I had discovered LGBT representation a lot sooner.

We get to see new and old characters again struggle with the dangers of the jungle, new and old villains, and yes, even love. One of the characters ends up having a pretty interesting twist towards the end. A new villain is one you wouldn't expect one to be! The book does leave at a cliffhanger obviously, but we do see a little of what will happen in the epilogue. It will be interesting to see how the next book will play out.

I listened mostly to the audio book but have both that and the Kindle version. The narrator read out the story very well, with different voices and tones for each character. There were a couple of times where a character or two sounded the same as the narrator, usually with Willow, for example. This was the first audio book I had fully listened to and bought, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I do question a lot of these 1 star reviews saying their kids were disappointed. Were they really disappointed, or was it really the parents taking the books away, saying they can't read them anymore due to hateful views? As said earlier in the review, the series has murder, war, magic, racism, etc., sometimes in graphic detail. For some examples, one dragon killed their parent without even knowing it, and one used their magic to force their father to commit suicide by slicing his throat open. A dragon burns their opponents to death with their fire scales, and another dragon has their face painfully disfigured by another dragon's toxic spit. One dies by electrocution, and another dies by boiling hot lava. We even have one or two dragon characters who enjoyed witnessing these types of gory incidents. But nah, the one single gay ship out of all that is the issue.

Title: I don’t even know where to start.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019
Review: Okay, so first: the bad.
Whenever I first started this book, I was worried that it wouldn’t further the third arc’s plot quickly enough. By the end, though, it felt just a *teensy bit* too fast.
Also, Turtle didn’t get nearly as much spotlight as he deserved, but that’s just a nitpick coming from a Turtle fanboy.

And that’s it! Onto the good:
SUNDEW AND WILLOW ARE SO FLIPPING ADORABLE! And I thought Blue and Cricket were one of the cutest things ever, but Sundew and Willow’s relationship is probably the most romantic and sweet one Tui has ever written. Definitely one of the highlights of the book. I would gush about it more, but there are other things to talk about.
Things happen! This may not come as a surprise to someone who is used to Wings of Fire, but as someone who has just finished reading the first two books of Warriors: TNP, this feels like a breath of fresh, forest air. I totally expected it to end when Sundew and her friends (and Nettle) found Hawthorn, but nope! The Wings of Fire universe was completely ripped open by the end. It was technically foreshadowed at the end of book 12, but I NEVER could’ve guessed the circumstances in which they would be leaving Pantala. Like Cricket, I have SO MANY QUESTIONS!
I loved the divide in the LeafWing tribe. The PoisonWings and SapWings didn’t just represent different mindsets among their leaders, but with it came misconceptions about the opposing tribes. The PoisonWings thought the SapWings were sappy, peace loving dragons (hence the name) that weren’t willing to do anything to stop the HiveWing oppression. So basically RainWings. And the SapWings believed that the PoisonWings were “offshoots” and perhaps a bit savage, with names based off of dangerous plants and pouches full of deadly weapons. However, as Sundew and Willow soon realized, they were both practically the same tribe, just with misunderstandings about each other. I love how Willow acts surprised at Sundew’s appearance when they first meet, as if she expected her to look like a dragon from a completely different tribe. There are more themes to cover, but that’s one of the big ones.
I also got the audiobook alongside the (delayed) Kindle release. I’d give Shannon’s performance 5 stars as well; though I’m not an expert in narration, I thought the majority of her performance was fantastic, with the only issues I had being nitpicks on how Cricket and Blue should sound (especially Cricket, though; I thought she sounded too cold when I expected her to sound warm and energetic).
There’s so much more to talk about with this book, but I don’t want this review to be too long. I want to keep this off the top of my head for the time being.

In conclusion, if you like Wings of Fire, and you’ve been keeping up with the books, do not hesitate to buy this. You will adore it.
If you like Wings of Fire but haven’t been keeping up with the third arc, buy books 11 and 12 and then read book 13. It’s a good book on its own, but you’ll get a lot more out of it with some context.
If you haven’t read Wings of Fire, but you’re interested in this book, get the third arc if you’re inpatient; it doesn’t require very much context from the previous two. If you are patient, read the entire series and prepare to fall in love with these books.

Title: Poor pacing and disjointed characters
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2023
Review: I really enjoy the Wings of Fire book series. It's engaging and has good characters. But this book stands out as not having those same qualities. First off, the pacing feels rushed or forced as if the book were rewritten from some original form. The tension is really there where it needs to be and the mystery of the breath of evil is not realized. It could have been done so much more like a mystery like the second book with Tsunami and the eggs that kept getting smashed. Second. This book feels like it's characters are not really interacting well. This is compounded by a poorly realized romance between Sundew and Willow. The queen and Hawthorne also are not fully used in my opinion. Characters need to be more in the story to have tension. This story could have been better for sure. It's ok in the end, but not great. Thanks.
