The victory was won by Bogota's previous mayor and senator from the Republic. The result officially means that he is a candidate for the presidency of the Republic which he aspirates to for the third time.

The huge turnout in the consultations made him the most representative representative of the Colombian left. He is an excellent potential presidential candidate despite his controversial opinions and ideas on many fronts.

Petro declared his intention to reform the pension system through the establishment of a public manager of the pension fund. The pension system will be "mixed" and will complement the private fund.

He stated that Colombia is not a pension system, but instead a system that is based on bank profit. This is what people believe makes Petro the most likely candidate for the president. Petro has stated that he wouldn't eliminate them, but would pursue reforms in pensions to ensure that Colombians have a minimum pension. He said "no requirement" to increase the age of retirement.

Another controversial issue is his repeated pledges to stop oil extraction when his presidency begins. This has created uncertainty for investors as well as the general market.

Experts estimate that Petro's plan to end exploration of oil in Colombia will result in a cost of around $4.3 billion.

His position on health concerns has also been controversial. He has been insistent about eliminating EPS in order to replace it with a preventive system that "guarantees both the rights of people, not the profits of banksters".

He also has questioned the independence of Banco de la Republica. Petro said that the Bank Board of Directors of the Bank was part of the Democratic Center, a political party. "What we would like, however, is a truly independent Bank of the Republic (...) and it is important to us that the board of Directors is represented by the community," the candidate said in the middle of the debate.

Invamer claims that Petro is leading the voter's intention to vote in the presidential elections.

The idea of releasing money to finance spending on government was also controversial.
