The Nashville and Decatur Railroad was in operation five months before the start of the Civil War and 17 months before the Federals took control of Nashville and the railroad. Running through Central Tennessee to Alabama, the highly contested line passed through Confederate-held territory, where rebels and their sympathizers continually sabotaged bridges, trestles and track.
This first full-length work on the N&D Railroad emphasizes its importance in the Western Theater and brings to light the four key men who kept it open for the duration of the war. Significant military activities in the region are described, along with the contraband camp, military complex and other features surrounding the railroad's only tunnel.

Review: War history often reveals a few key decisions or random events within each major battle that swing the tide. In this book, however, author Walter Green tells in meticulously researched detail of the nearly continuous four year battle to control the rail lines in TN, AL, and GA. In the final year both sides rallied every resource they could, knowing the outcome would determine who would win the war. Each side used brilliant strategies and changed tactics day-to-day in their effort. Throw in ingenious engineering, complex logistics, devastating demolition, guerilla warfare and the significant impact of weather and command leadership, and you have an amazing story of the Civil War.

Review: Mr. Green has delivered a tremendous accounting of the Civil War in Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama. The book is written from an engineering perspective focused on the railroad that afforded the Federals the ability to move and supply its troops in the mid-south. The writing is clear and concise with excellent thumbnail information on the players along with great maps, sketches and photographs. Anyone interested in the civil war, engineering or the history of middle Tennessee will enjoy this book.

Review: A great book for Civil War and railroad enthusiasts. The author has brought to life the Nashville and Decatur which played a more significant role in the war than we knew. The chapter on African Americans and the tunnel area in Giles County is especially interesting and important; what a fascinating section on the railroad which has been largely overlooked. Mr. Green obviously did a lot of research and tied everything together very well. I recommend it highly!

Review: I have been studying the major battles of the Civil War my entire life. I found Walter Green’s historical research as a civil engineer to have shed a new perspective light on the impact of the armies as they negotiated the difficulties of physical barriers of rivers,streams.railroad structures, block houses, and trestles while engaged in combat operations. Particularly insightful was Green’s narrative on Hood’s retreat after the battle of Franklin. It is amazing the speed with which the armies could both build and destroy bridges and railroads . The book is very detailed and insightful. It provides a unique window into importance of the railroads during the war.

Review: In the now highly politicized state of Civil War historiography it is a pleasure to see Walter Green, Jr’s, “The Nashville and Decatur In the Civil War: History of an Embattled Railroad,” achieve publication. The importance of the subject is often lost in the wash of battle & campaign studies, biographies and social monographs. This volume, a strategic/operational and logistics study is a good one.
The Civil War history of the Nashville and Decatur is thoroughly chronicled, examining its importance in the Union efforts, using Nashville as a base, to advance through southern Middle Tennessee, seize Northern Alabama, Chattanooga, and finally, supply Sherman’s campaign to take Atlanta. Principal figures, some largely unknown, in the efforts to build, rebuild, and maintain the line are covered; the experience of the laborers, many of them former slaves is very well done, and the coverage of the guerrilla war and principal campaigns by a non-military historian is credible.
The appendices are worth the price of the volume alone. Also, the research, grounded in primary source material, memoirs, correspondence, etc, is impressive. I highly recommend this work to those who are interested in Civil War history, 19th century Tennessee history and the history of development of railroad transportation in the United States.

Review: Railroads have always fascinated me since I was a little girl. My grandfather and dad would take me to the tracks in Franklin, TN to put a penny on a rail and watch in awe as a train would flatten it! I remember sometimes having to wait hours for a train to come by and once we heard a distant rumble and horn, we would quickly head back to the tracks ready to search for my penny!
This spawned a lifelong interest in trains. It’s these same tracks that are at the heart of this book written by my father, one of Franklin’s few history buffs. Years of research have been poured into this book and I am so excited to finally get my hands on it!!!
