The word “behar,” which makes up the second part of the district’s name and means “to journey,” is derived from the Sanskrit verb vihara, which means “to pass through.” From the fourth to the twelfth centuries, the Koch Rajbongshi Kings used Cooch Behar as a route for their travels.
