The 23rd Light Horse Regiment is one of the most decorated regiments in the Australian Army. The regiment was formed in 1915 and fought in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. In 1978, the regiment merged with the 14th/20th King's Royal Hussars to form the Queen's Royal Australian Hussars.In 1897, a group of military personnel from Hawaii sailed to Australia to help fight in the Boer War. After the war, these soldiers decided to stay and form their own regiment. The 23rd Light Horse Regiment was officially formed on 1 October 1915 at Lithgow, New South Wales. The regiment served in World War I and fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. After World War I, the regiment served in World War II and fought at Tobruk, Kokoda Track, Buna-Gona and Sanananda. In 1945, the 23rd Light Horse Regiment was part of the Australian Army that invaded Japan after World War II ended. The regiment fought in various battles throughout Japan including Kobe and Nagoya. In 1949, the 23rd Light Horse Regiment became part of the 5th Cavalry Brigade which was later renamed as 4th Cavalry Division.
