Book Information
A vivid and timely re-examination of one of young America’s most complicated figures: the war hero turned infamous traitor, Benedict Arnold.

Proud and talented, history now remembers this conflicted man solely through the lens of his last desperate act of treason. Yet the fall of Benedict Arnold remains one of the Revolutionary period’s great puzzles. Why did a brilliant military commander, who repeatedly risked his life fighting the British, who was grievously injured in the line of duty, and fell into debt personally funding his own troops, ultimately became a traitor to the patriot cause?

Malcolm skillfully unravels the man behind the myth and gives us a portrait of the true Arnold and his world. There was his dramatic victory against the British at Saratoga in 1777 and his troubled childhood in a pre-revolutionary America beset with class tension and economic instability. We witness his brilliant wartime military exploits and his contentious relationship with a newly formed and fractious Congress, who were fearful of powerful military leaders.

Review
"‘Since the fall of Lucifer,’ Nathanael Greene, a general in the Continental Army, wrote after the Revolutionary War, ‘nothing has equaled the fall of Arnold.’ Joyce Lee Malcolm knows this story, and yet she has embraced the thankless, if not Sisyphean, task of contextualizing America’s first traitor in her new and aptly named biography, The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold. Malcolm has written a fine biography—the best in recent memory, in fact." ― The Washington Post

"Joyce Lee Malcolm describes 'the most infamous man in American history' as a two-dimensional caricature in the minds of most Americans. Ms. Malcolm’s The Tragedy of Benedict Arnold does show that Arnold’s hunger for recognition and refusal to compromise embroiled him in conflicts that weakened his commitment to independence. Arnold was especially resentful, she notes, of the ill treatment he felt he had received from civilian politicians. She draws on colonial history and the outlook of the 18th-century Atlantic world to describe a profound civilian distrust of professional soldiers and standing armies. Ms. Malcolm, a historian at George Mason University’s law school, describes how tensions between George Washington and the Continental Congress, whose members had adopted this wary civilian view of the military, fueled ever greater discontent within the Continental Army. Ms. Malcolm suggests that Arnold—helped along by his prickly personality and the trauma of a crippling wound—reacted by switching sides." ― The Wall Street Journal

"An attempt to bring understanding, if not forgiveness, to the story of Benedict Arnold. Examining a variety of primary sources, Malcolm dives further into the psyche of the man synonymous with the word ‘traitor.’" ― Kirkus Reviews

"Solid. A readable account of a remarkable life." ― Publishers Weekly

"Acknowledges and builds on more than a century of writings on the subject, bringing a fresh perspective by making use of resources only recently discovered. A compelling read for anyone interested in early American biographies." ― Library Journal

"Malcolm does for Benedict Arnold what Ron Chernow did for Alexander Hamilton, reexamining and redeeming a complex historical figure. Though Malcolm’s tome is not as lengthy as Chernow’s, she does an excellent job of transforming American history’s best-known villain into a war hero who loved his country so much that he gave his heart, soul, and body to the American cause during the Revolutionary War. This adventurous, entertaining read will appeal to a broad audience, and book clubs will thoroughly enjoy this game-changer, a multilayered reassessment of a long misunderstood American." ― Booklist (starred)

Title: Benedict Arnold--Patriot and Traitor
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2018
Review: After I finished this book I couldn't help but wonder if this entire tragedy could have been avoided. There are no winners in this book. Jealously, envy, and hatred are just a few of the words raising their ugly head in this book. We have an incompetent general in Horatio Gates who gladly took the credit for the victory at Saratoga while Benedict Arnold involved himself where he wasn't wanted and brought the battle to victory. We also have a United States Congress who wasn't seeing that their soldiers were paid and that included enemies of Arnold's. One can't help but feel for Arnold who was putting his life on the line and suffering injuries at Quebec and once again at Saratoga, being away from his family while his business at home was suffering, and using his own money to help the cause of the war. Frustration continued to mount when he faced a court-martial among his Congressional enemies and also saw others lower in rank get promoted over him. Another who lost out in this fiasco was Major John Andre of the British who was intercepted by robbers who found incriminating evidence in his boot. Andre was eventually sent to the gallows. Another one who suffered was Arnold's wife Peggy along with the couple's children.

I found it interesting that Arnold claimed his desire to turn against America was due to France's entry into the war on the side of the United States. Arnold remembered France's cruelty along with their Indian allies against England at Fort William Henry during the French and Indian War. Arnold ended up being the biggest loser of all because nobody respects a turncoat because the trust in that individual is just not there.

In addition trekking through the Maine wilderness during miserable weather and having to portage around waterfalls on their way to Quebec was a feat in itself. Then to have to engage in a fight following arrival just appears beyond human endurance. Yes, Arnold had his failings but if the United States Congress could have shown some appreciation the story of America's foremost fighter in the War for Independence may very well have had a happier ending.

Title: Factual inaccuracies
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2019
Review: Don't waste your time on this book unless you want to risk being fed inaccurate history. I noticed two glaring inaccuracies in this book before I quit reading it.

When speaking of Thomas Mifflin's incompetence as quartermaster general, she wrote, "He proved himself woefully incompetent in supplying the army at Mount Vernon...." MOUNT VERNON? When was the army quartered at Mount Vernon? Surely she and her editors should have known that it should read Valley Forge.

On page 255 she wrote, "He [Arnold] argued that any order not against the laws or principles of the Constitution should be obeyed." What is she talking about? The Constitution had not even been conceived in 1778. As a professor at a law school she should have known that. Again, where were her editors?

I quit reading the book after the comment about the Constitution. If she has made such basic mistakes in her book, what else in the book is inaccurate? I don't want to read "history" that is wrong. I don't want others to read it either; usually I donate books to a local library for its used book sale. Not this book though--I am going to just throw it away.

Title: Thought provoking analysis
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2018
Review: I saw the author Joyce Malcolm speak at a book talk several weeks ago. I found the discussion fascinating and thus ordered her book. It was truly a nuanced discussion of Benedict Arnold - including early life challenges and many notable accomplishments as a leader of the Patriots. I was well aware of his leadership at Saratoga but learned a great deal about his spirited leadership at Quebec, Lake Champlain and twice helping to thwart attempted British invasions of the Hudson Valley which would isolate New England and New York from the remainder of the colonies. His treatment by the Pennsylvania legislature while serving as an administrator at Washington's behest (recovering from war wounds) was shocking. Malcolm did not sugar coat Arnold's complicity with a noted British spy (Major Andre) and attempted treachery at West Point. However, she did lay to rest assertions about his young wife being aware of his duplicity. Arnold's participation as a British commander the latter part of the war was disheartening to read. This book was truly an interesting historical perspective and added much to the significant literature that already exists on this topic.

Title: A new attitude.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2019
Review: I haven't finished this book yet but wanted to comment anyway. I have read in other books on Benedict Arnold that many military historians consider him the best General of both sides of that conflict. His victory early, on the Great Lakes probably prevented an early collapse of the colonial side and bought badly needed time for the rebels. After reading about his treatment, given little credit for his leadership and horrible slander, I wonder how many of the rest of us could have contended with such treatment. In my opinion he was driven to it, also another author claims he went to the British because they were less corrupt. That isn't saying much considering their own problems.

Title: Decent, But Hard To Read
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019
Review: The book was good overall, although it ended somewhat abruptly. The problem for me was the lack of proper punctuation, especially commas. That made it hard to follow what the author was trying to say, and made things often confusing. Punctuation matters, kids.

Title: Flawed
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2019
Review: No new info. She repeats the same Benedict Arnold biography we've all heard for decades, plus leaves out important info relevant to his decision to turn coat, such as failing to mention that Peggy Shippen and Andre had a pretty heavy connection. Also, most of her sources are third hand, very few are primary sources. Also, the story of Arnold being confined to his quarters by Gates at Saratoga has been debunked.

Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020
Review: So well written, simply put, a masterpiece about a man who betrayed by his country, because he himself felt betrayed by his country. Sheds a whole new light on Arnold, the great betrayer, and brave patriot.
