Overview
Guru Angad Dev Ji, born in 1504 as Bhai Lehna in the village of Matte di Sarai (now in Muktsar, Punjab, India), was the second Sikh Guru and a prominent figure in the development of Sikhism. Originally a devoted follower of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, he selflessly served the Guru and the community. Guru Angad Dev Ji played a pivotal role in organizing and preserving the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He introduced the Gurmukhi script, a modified version of the Punjabi script, to facilitate the recording and dissemination of Sikh scripture. Under his guidance, the langar (community kitchen) system was further institutionalized, promoting the principles of equality and selfless service. Guru Angad Dev Ji's commitment to education led to the establishment of schools to impart spiritual and moral teachings. He also composed hymns that are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, contributing significantly to the sacred Sikh scripture. His tenure as Guru, from 1539 until his passing in 1552, laid the foundation for the organizational structure of the Sikh community and strengthened its identity. Guru Angad Dev Ji's life exemplified humility, dedication, and a deep devotion to the Sikh principles laid down by Guru Nanak, leaving an indelible mark on Sikhism's evolution.
