Allan Osborne was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer, in 2008. Naturally, he and his wife Deb were devastated. Believing that knowledge is power, they immediately searched for information about this disease and its treatments. The more they learned, the less anxious they felt. Their knowledge gave them the confidence that, although their journey might be difficult, they could successfully navigate through it. It also gave them a sense of control. Most importantly, it gave them hope. In this book of essays, they share their journey to provide knowledge and inspiration to other patients, caregivers, and their families. It is divided into five parts. The first part is an overview of multiple myeloma and its treatment options. The next two parts contain essays chronicling their journey from the perspective of patient and caregiver. The fourth section provides information about the latest developments in multiple myeloma treatment. In the final section, the authors pay tribute to people who have inspired them and have given them strength, courage, and hope. The book also contains several appendices that list resources where patients and caregivers can find accurate, reliable, up-to-date information about multiple myeloma and treatment options.

About the Author
Allan Osborne is a retired elementary school principal and Deb Osborne is a retired elementary school teacher. They now spend their time travelling and volunteering. They are on the Patient and Family Advisory Council, Blum Center Advisory Committee, One-to-One Advisory Committee, and Legislative Action Committee at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. They write monthly blogs and do fundraising for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and volunteer for the Pan Mass Challenge.

Review: Have you ever heard of the disease called multiple myeloma? I had not known anyone who had it until my Education Law Association colleague, Dr. Allan Osborne, informed us some ten years ago that he had it. I just knew that it was a cancer that was very difficult to treat.As someone who has been the primary caregiver for a patient with cancer, I found the book most interesting and informative. I benefitted greatly from reading it, particularly because of the positive approach Allan and his wife Deb have taken. Allan closes each of his chapters with “Life is good” and Deb closes her with “Don’t stop believing.” These phrases accurately reflect their personal philosophies and the tone of their book.If you want to know how Allan and Deb fought and won their battle with cancer, you should read this book. As the book’s description indicates, it is divided into five parts. In the second and third sections, they describe Allan’s diagnosis and treatment and how they have dealt with his disease.Other sections of the book provide important information about the disease and its treatment. A final section pays tribute to people who have helped Allan and Deb in their journey and inspired them to fight and win.
