US Army 551st Parachute Infantry Regiment Airborne Hawaiian Shirt
For nearly sixty years, the 551st Parachute Infantry Regiment has been an elite and fearsome force in the US Army. The regiment is known for its airborne capabilities, and its Hawaiian shirt, worn by members of the unit, is a testament to this heritage. The 551st Parachute Infantry Regiment was created on September 15, 1948, from elements of the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment. The 503rd had been activated during World War II as part of the 82nd Airborne Division and participated in Operation Neptune's Spear, the Allied invasion of Normandy. After the war, the regiment was stationed in Japan and Korea before being stationed in Germany. In 1957, after nine years of service in Germany, the unit was ordered to Hawaii to take part in Operation Urgent Fury, the US-backed coup d'état that overthrew Fidel Castro's government in Cuba. The 551st was part of a brigade-level airborne unit that landed on Kaua'i. The unit fought in pitched battles against Castro's forces and helped put an end to the Cuban Revolution.Over the next few decades, the 551st would see deployments to Grenada (1983), Panama (1989), Desert Storm (1990-1991), and Haiti (2004). In addition to its combat duties, the regiment has played a significant role in humanitarian missions, including relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Superstorm Sandy (2012).
