Title: Ugh. Had potential, but it was squandered.

Review: I would have given this book a 3, but as part of a series, with a dreadful book 2, I have to warn people off.
First and biggest complaint about this book is astronauts acting like impulsive and stupid children. Astronauts tend to be the most disciplined professionals and for good reasons. They follow protocol to the letter. Not in this book. They act like a bunch of little boys finding something in a field they don't know anything about and just do whatever comes to mind. "Hey, here's an alien artifact. What should we do?" "I know, lacking anything else to do, let's just zap it with energy." Just stupid.
Gets a bunch of science wrong too.
The story had potential, but it was VERY poorly executed. The second book was very preachy about man ruining the planet and basically being a scourge on the planet.
Don't waste your time with this series, or even this first book. Could have been so much better.

Review: I really don't like to give negative reviews, but I feel compelled to protect other readers from this experience. This book is billed as a "science fiction thriller." It is NOT science fiction; it is pure fantasy. And, it is a thriller only if you get your thrills reading about someone having his head blown off or being ripped apart by bullets every few pages
The characters are caricatures. None of them ---not even the "good guys" --are likable. They all lie and cheat (and worse) to achieve their own ends.
The prose is clunky. Descriptions are all in meters and bounds. We are told the size, shape and color of things but nothing of their intrinsic texture. Parts of the story occur in Antarctica and basically we are told it's cold
Nothing about the stark beauty if the place.
The whole book reads like a tale made up by a couple of adolescent boys who have watched too many lows budget sci-fi flicks. I won't waste my time on the sequels. If I had actually paid for this book I would ask for my money back.

Review: This was well done especially for a first time author. The pacing of a screenplay told over two timelines, 2018 and 2042, with characters i connected with.
Year 2042 Agents Agatha Devenworth and Pano Hofer are sent looking for archaeologist Ron Jackson who disappeared in 2018. A search that takes them to Antarctica where they discover a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species. Oh, my!
Astronaut Dr. Filio Amarosa, the lone survivor of the first Mars mission. What did they find on Mars? What survived the destruction of the ship that millions of dollars in rewards are being offered to find the ship at the bottom of the Indian Ocean? What secrets is she hiding that she is willing to go to any length to be on the second mission.
This reminded me of the movie Prometheus with the unexplained happenings of an X-Files episode.
Book ends with a major cliffhanger. Book 2 will be out in May.

Review: This book starts with multiple characters in different timelines. Perhaps that would be somewhat intriguing if there were discernible threads between them, but I found it disjointed. Only one of the characters really interested me, but there were quite a few that didn’t. The curious excavation site which we’re sent to in two timelines turns out to hold a ridiculous find. Spoiler Alert! Life evolves practically the same way on two separate planets in a solar system to result in primates as the dominant animals on each? Not likely. Not remotely likely. Mostly, I had to skim, because the action was slow in the middle of the story. How long can one vehicle try to make it across Antarctica? This book had an unsatisfying ending to set up book 2 in the series. I’ll pass. Just didn’t hold my interest.

Review: Seldom find sci fi written within a decade or two of the date read. The 3 Fossil books are a great read anchoring the action in today's social/political scene but tossing out the possible/probable space science. The mechanics of space flight are familiar. Even "the men in black" are included. These are an excellent read. We hope to get to Mars in the next decade. Will we find something interesting?

Review: This one of the better books I have read recently. I was pleasantly surprised to find that characters were well developed and there was a plausible plot line once I took the leap of faith that all sci-fi readers make to get into the story. I haven’t read the other books in the series yet and am hoping they will be as well written.
