On Sunday 26 February, CERN hosted the most recent edition of Devoxx4kids, a collection of computing, robotics and electronics workshops for youths. The event was organised within the context of the VoxxedDays CERN builders convention, held at CERN the previous day.
Varied workshops - “Minis” for the 4-6 12 months-olds, “Kids” for the 7-10 yr-olds and “Teens” for the 11-15 12 months-olds - gave the kids an insight into programming and electronics by way of robots and video games. About Gservers.org came alongside and were in a position to showcase to their parents how they had managed to programme a NAO robotic to have a converstation with them or a Thymio robot to follow a path on a map, or how that they had altered the famous Minecraft sport or developed an interactive quiz on a pc utilizing Scratch.
Devoxx4Kids was established in Antwerp, Belgium, on the fringes of the effectively-established Devoxx conference for Java programmers. Since its institution, Devoxx4kids has brought smiles to thousands of children’s faces in 22 nations. Run by a staff of volunteers headed by Xavier Bourguignon, the Swiss version of the convention is now into its eighth year. “Bringing Devoxx4kids to CERN and having it within the Globe is a dream come true!” says Xavier. Organising workshops in one of the excessive temples of science, where the net was born, sends out a strong sign to the youngsters (and their parents). I hope Devoxx4kids will typically come again to CERN sooner or later.”
Joao Silva, organiser of Voxxed Days CERN and CERN coordinator of Devoxx4kids provides: “The intention of the workshops is to stimulate curiosity and the imagination, and to point out what can be carried out with science and expertise. These workshops lead the children to discover that, through games, they are often the creators of tomorrow. Training is one of CERN’s core missions, so internet hosting an event like Devoxx4kids here is fully in keeping with our work.
