US Army Air Force Airship Pilots Wings In WWII Hawaiian Shirt
During World War II, the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) utilized airships as a strategic way to transport troops and materiel around the world. The USAAF had two types of airship pilots: those who flew the big rigid airships, like the USS Akron and USS Macon, and those who flew the smaller nonrigid airships, like the C-47 and C-53.In order to qualify as a pilot in the USAAF, you had to have at least a private pilot's license. Once you had that, you needed to pass a written test and an oral test. The written test was designed to measure your understanding of aviation concepts and procedures. The oral test was designed to measure your ability to communicate effectively with other pilots and air traffic controllers.Once you had passed both tests, you could apply to become an airship pilot with the USAAF. If you were accepted into the program, you would be assigned to one of the airship squadrons. You would then attend training that would prepare you for your duties as an airship pilot. When it came time for World War II, the USAAF didn't have enough pilots to man all of its airships. So they decided to use volunteers from the civilian population. This is how most of America's first generation of airship pilots got their start in aviation.
